For the first time... I feel Wicked

Sep 29, 2005 00:14

When we lost the tickets I pretty much thought life as we knew it was over. Fortunately Denver Center is used to idiots and sent more without too much fuss. And thus we donned our finest and mixed with the gentry for a day, dining at the ritzy Theatre Cafe (where the waitstaff keeps careful track of the time and informs you as often as is needed how much time is left until the curtain rises). At the appropriate hour, neither too late nor too early, we casually strolled across the sculpture garden under the sweeping arches and into the main theatre, assured that - for an afternoon - we were goddesses.

The show lived up to every ounce of expectation. In fact, though I knew the story and score by heart, I was blown away all over again. I laughed. I cried. I admired the wit of including sly references to the movie without going overboard. (Example: Nessa - What's in the punch? Boq: Lemon, mangos and pears. Nessa - Oh my! There wasn't a soul who didn't want to jump up and dance down the Yellow Brick Road, chanting "Lions, Tigers and Bears, Oh MY!")

One of the delights was that I was surrounded by people who didn't know it nearly as well as I did. The guy next to me was a good example, but the house was full of them. This show wasn't treated as a staid theatre event but a rock concert, with many a WHOOOOO HOOOOOO and YEAH!!!! RIGHT!!!! after a particularly thunderous number (The Wizard and I was particularly amazing. Just flat out blow me away). I can't describe the event better except "Perfect". Couldn't be improved. Amazing. Wow. Unbelievable. And the ultimate praise... "Liked it better than Phantom and Les Miz rolled together".

Love, you know you're a goddess, right? Right? I've told you often enough, right? Just in case. You're a goddess. Life can end now - I'd die happy.

Oh - an interesting PS to this story. We were beyond lucky to get these tickets. They booked the show for 2 weeks and reserved all tickets so that to get them you had to subscribe to the season. (I could fly to New York, see the broadway show, stay in a Nice hotel and fly back for less money than a season subscription...) Apparently the Center has heard the grumbling of the public. They announced today that tickets go on sale THIS MONDAY for the "RETURN OF WICKED"!! They will put the tickets on sale to the general public so all who wish to see the show will be able.

One catch. The "Return" will take place May 25 - June 16. Of 2007. When I heard that I just naturally assumed I mis-heard, so I went to confirm. No. Really. Tickets go on sale Monday for a show two years from now. Oy. My mom won't buy tickets for fear she'll die before the curtains rise. No, she's not that old. It's just how she thinks. But it's a good question. If you die before then can someone inherit them? Hum.
