You have my condolences.

I always feel thankful that I got to spend time with my dog before she passed away. Having them put to sleep is probably a whole other feeling, but I'm sure you'll want to do the same.

That sucks. But. At least you got a warning? We had to put our cat to sleep two years ago but we didn't get any warning before the stuff set in that caused us to decide it. .-.

Of course that is still no consolation for being the worst thing to ever do. Ever.
