Prologue  One  Two  Three

A throbbing pain shot through her head as Demi opened her eyes, the aftermath of the drugs the guys had used. She brought her hand up to her forehead and groaned, closing her eyes again so she wouldn’t have to see the bright light which came through the windows.

“Here,” a soft voice said and she opened one eye only to see a glass of water and an aspirin right in front of her face. She gratefully took it and swallowed the aspirin before drowning the water, setting the empty glass on the nightstand.

“Thanks,” she answered, slowly sitting up and groaning once again as the rays of sunshine hit her eyes. She lifted up her right hand to keep the rays from getting to her face.

“You remember last night?” the voice questioned and she felt the bed shift, indicating that the person had sat down next to her.

“Yeah, thanks for taking care of me, Claudia,” Demi smiled, dropping her hand and turning her head so that she could look at the girl. “And for not selling me out to the paparazzi.”

“That would kind of be bad publicity,” Claudia chuckled, noticing how the rays of sunshine caressed one side of Demi’s face, giving it a warm glow. She had always been a big fan of the singer and she couldn’t believe how people could do this to her. “You don’t deserve that.”

“Thanks,” Demi said for the third time before rubbing her forehead again with the palm of her hand. She took a deep breath, clearing her throat. “And um… Sorry for what I did last night. As you know, I wasn’t quite myself.”

“It’s okay, to be honest I didn’t really mind,” Claudia smirked, getting up from the bed and handing Demi (who was looking at her with a raised eyebrow before mirroring Claudia’s smirk) her phone back. “I hope you don’t mind, but I called Selena. She’s coming to pick you up at five.”

“Oh,” Demi said, her smile dropping and, while ignoring the still throbbing pain in her head, getting up from the bed. “Whoa,” she mumbled, quickly sitting down again as the room started spinning around her.

“Careful,” Claudia said, being by her side in a matter of seconds. She knelt down in front of the singer and looked up at her. “You might wanna lay down for a couple more hours,” she laughed, yet turned serious again rather quickly. “It wasn’t such a good idea to call Selena, was it?”

“No, no, it’s a great idea, I think it’s good you called my best friend,” Demi answered, smiling widely, but it still seemed a little forced. “I wouldn’t know a better person to call.”

“You’re lying,” Claudia simply stated, getting up from her place on the floor to walk to the other side of the bed. She sat down in indian style and faced Demi. “I won’t push you into telling me what happened, but if you want to talk about it, I’m listening.”

In that moment, Demi knew that Claudia was the type of fan that could easily turn into her friend. Before she knew it, tears were rolling down her cheeks as she recalled everything that had happened the past night. She felt two strong arms envelope her in a hug and she happily leaned into it, crying on Claudia’s shoulder.

At four pm sharp, after having paced for half an hour straight, Selena let out a sigh. She knew it was only a fifteen minute drive to the Hilton Hotel, but she went to the kitchen to find her car keys. In the drawer, right next to her car keys, she found Demi’s favorite guitar pick. She had once given it to her so she’d always remember her friend.

After ending their friendship, Selena always kept the pick close to her. It had become her good luck charm. She took it in her hand, yet as soon as she touched it an video played in front of her eyes.

Claudia and Demi were sitting on the bed together, Demi having a tear strained face. The singer stood up to go to the bathroom before suddenly a man appeared behind her. He made a fireball in his hand and threw it at Demi, leaving nothing but ashes and a devestated Claudia.

Selena gasped as it ended, waisting no time in taking her car keys and rushing outside to start up her car. She pulled out of her driveway with screeching tires and sped towards the Hilton Hotel where she bursted through the revolving doors and slammed her hands on the counter. “I need the roomnumber of Claudia.”

“I need a last name.”

“Just look it up!” Selena practically yelled, a mix of anger and fear creeping up her body, not wanting to lose Demi. Her breathing got heavier the longer she had to wait and the woman behind the counter kept searching for the name.

“You’re lucky, there’s only one Claudia. She’s in room 18, that’s the first floor, right down the …”

Before she could finish her sentence, Selena had dashed through the large hallway and into the elevator. The number shone a bright orange after Selena pushed it. “Come on, come on, come on,” she mumbled, already rushing through the door before it completely opened.

“14, 15, 16..” she mumbled as she ran past the doors. “18.” She didn’t even knock on the door she pushed it open and bursted in, not believing what she was seeing. “Demi?”

Demi didn’t find the will to pull back from Claudia. Somehow, the girl had a calming effect on her. She gripped her shirt tightly and spoke through her sobs. “Selena broke off our friendship…” she quietly admitted, not knowing why she was telling it to a fan. “And she showed up after my mom died.”

“Your mom died?” Claudia questioned in shock, pulling back only to bring the singer back in for a comforting hug. “I’m so sorry.” She rubbed circles on Demi’s back with her right hand, holding her close against her body as the Disney Star cried louder. “What happened?”

“I don’t know, I have to go back to Dallas,” Demi cried, burrying her head in Claudia’s neck. She wiped away the tears with the back of her hand, trying to get controle of her breathing. “I’m sorry. I’m just venting and you don’t need this.”

“No, it’s okay,” Claudia smiled, pulling back so that she could look into Demi’s eyes. She quickly got up and went into the ajoining bathroom to wet a wash cloth. Then she walked back in, kneeling in front of Demi and wiping her tears away. “Otherwise Selena will see that you’ve been crying,” she whispered.

Demi nodded and closed her eyes, actually enjoying the touch. When she heard heavy footsteps, because someone was running, down the hall, she just knew it was Selena. She took the wash cloth from Claudia and put it aside. The door opened and Demi leaned forward, pressing her lips against Claudia’s. “Demi?”

Pulling back from, a still dazed (and very much confused), Claudia, Demi faced Selena with little expression. “Selena,” she answered, reaching down and taking Claudia’s hands in her own so that she would sit down on the bed. Claudia happily obliged, having a feeling of what Demi was doing.

The actress had no words for what she just had seen and momentarily forgot why she came earlier until Demi stood up. “I’m going to the bathroom.” And then it hit her. In her vision, the man showed up when she went into the bathroom.

“Don’t,” Selena called out, rushing towards Demi and pushing her back on the bed.

“Excuse me?” Demi questioned, looking from Selena to Claudia with a raised eyebrow before settling her eyes on Selena again.

“I mean, don’t go alone, take Claudia with you,” Selena quickly breathed out, taking both their hands and practically pushing them in the bathroom.

“What the hell is going -” Claudia couldn’t finish her sentence as Selena cut it off by slamming the door closed. “Great. This is just great.”

Just as Selena had seen, a tall man shimmered into the room, yet he was taken back when he found Selena and not Demi. “You? What are you doing here? They told me you wouldn’t be here!”

“I guess they are wrong. No one is going to kill Demi,” Selena snapped, balding up her fist. The man knew what was coming so he tried to shimmer out. “Oh no you don’t,” Selena said, opening one hand and freezing him so that he couldn’t go anywhere. “This is what you get for trying to kill her.” With that, she opened both her hands, making the man expload.

All what was left of him were a couple of ashes and a dark stain on the bright red carpet. “Shit,” she mumbled, scratching the back of her head, because she knew she couldn’t keep Demi and Claudia in the bathroom any longer. She had to think of a quick way to get rid of the stain. “Let the object of objection become but a dream as I cause the seen to be unseen,” she whispered.

“What was that all about?” Demi questioned angrily, bursting through the bathroom door, making Selena slightly jump. She looked around the room with squinted eyes before settling on glaring at Selena.

Just in time, Selena thought, glancing at the spot where the black stain and ashes used to be. “I’ll tell you later. We have to go now,” Selena answered, walking towards the door without looking back, because she couldn’t handle it if she saw Demi and Claudia kissing again.

Demi still glared at Selena before turning to Claudia and picking up a pen from the table. She scribbled down her number on a piece of paper before wrapping her arms around the taller girl’s neck. “Call me,” she whispered, leaning in and bringing their lips together again for a soft kiss.

Claudia, still having no idea of what was going on (well, she had a slight idea), couldn’t really say no to a kiss from Demi Lovato. She hesitently rested her hands on Demi’s hips before the singer pulled back and winked at her. Then she gathered her things (her purse and jacket) and pushed past Selena through the door. “Take me to Dallas.”

Selena turned around and if looks could kill Claudia would’ve been dead and burried. She held up her hand and pointed a finger at the girl, biting her teeth in order to keep her self controle. She grumbled, yet turned around and slammed the door shut behind her before storming down the hall.
