Around the time of the Roman Empire Hungary was a part of a region known as Pannonia, just west of the Danube river. However, Hungary was nothing more than a bunch of different tribes, the one most often spoke of being the Magyar people. Though it took some time for these groups to become the actual Hungarian people, taking as long as 896 AD to come together to form the Hungarians, after Charlemagne of the Franks is unable to make a lasting impression upon the area.

Through this unification the Magyars named a ruler of the tribes through something they called the covenant of blood, a pact that is completed by the princes (the princes of the other Magyar tribes of Hungary) letting their blood into a vessel to give their oath over and declare their new ruler. After this oath they were officially declared as the Hungarian nation which began the medieval period of Hungary. During this time Hungary raided most of Eastern Europe, going as far as Spain in their raiding, proving them a formidable force until the Germans came to bring them down once more. This led to the Battle of Lechfeld in which the Hungarians experienced defeat enough in which to end their raiding mission as well as slowly begin to pull them apart once more. During this time the current overlord of the Magyar tribes tried to integrate Hungary into Christian Western Europe, using it as a model for rebuilding. This slowly began to succeed, leaving an empire to his son to control. Hungary was none-too-pleased at this change but kept her silence, figuring that her people knew what they were doing. At least for the moment, anyway.

For the next around two hundred years not much happened in the history of her life, save for the fact that she was placed under a Catholic Apostolic Kingdom during the time. A huge difference between the previous history. Though with this change brought problems as well as Hungary’s current boss (saint Stephen I) there were still killings going on amongst her people, particularly those who wished to stay in their pagan manners or to ally with the Eastern Christian Byzantine Empire (also known as the Eastern Roman Empire) as well as enough reforms to look like any other western feudal state under a Christianization. Though what had not been expected by neither the people nor the country herself was that these reforms would lead to a stronger Hungary. One that could fight off the advances of the Germans as well as nomadic tribes, even surviving the Battle of Mohi against the Mongols. Even though this battle left Hungary battered and torn she came back once more, stronger than ever despite the battle wounds that were left upon her body. Though this battle left an impact upon her as well as her people as about a quarter of the population was killed.

However, Hungary bounced right back as the people took the time to fortify and to make sure they could beat back the Ottoman Turks threat that came to them. For this reason alone Hungary continued to grow stronger, up until the Renaissance era with the introduction of Hungary’s boss known as Matthias Corvinus who would later become her most beloved. During this time many changes began to happen once more, changes that would lead to the Hungarian army becoming one of the most powerful, enough so to capture parts of Austria which included Vienna. With the desires of her boss the army soon became strong enough to also lead towards taking down the Ottoman Turks, if such was wished.

However, this army was not to last as Hungary’s next boss came to power. The reason being that the magnates wanted someone they could control and that made the army and Hungary herself suffer from the actions. With this change came peasant rebellions which also lead to the central government dissolving and allowing the Ottoman Turks to come in and destroy their army at the Battle of Mohács. This lead to the Turks taking over parts of Hungary and leading to even more chaos within the land itself which came to have two monarchs, one of Hungarian decent and the other of Austrian decent. Despite this chaos this gave Hungary a chance to get closer to Austria, a move she was more than willing to make. The chaos continued and soon the lands were split into three parts, one ruled by the Turks, one by Hungary, and the other under Austrian control.

During the Thirty Year’s war things were switched around once more as after the fact the Christian forces took back some of Hungary’s lands and after the Treaty of Karlowitz all of Hungary’s lands were back to Hungarian control. Though afterwards Royal Hungary (a section of country that was under Austrian control but still technically Hungary) encountered uprisings for equal religious tolerance which ended up in the Austrians crushing the movement and destroying several castles in the process.
Around 1820 a revival was made through Hungary, though the progress was slow due to the nobles of the time wishing to keep all their privileges. The important thing that came out of it was Hungarian being named the national language, leaving Hungary as to speaking the native language (though she kept her Latin as well, as a basis). However, trouble struck once more as the Emperors of the time refused to implement reforms, inciting a national revolution against them.

The revolutions continued on for some time, going between success and failure for the people of the country. The other force continually pushing them back being the Habsburgs (the Austrian rulers of Habsburg (Royal) Hungary), though eventually with enough help from other nationalities within Hungary they managed to pull up a Hungarian army to defeat the Austrian armies of the area. However this did not last long as Austria’s boss called in the help of Russia to come beat down the resistance, which was done with relative ease. This allowed for Austria to regain control again, going so far as to execute thirteen Hungarian leaders in the process. This ended up upsetting Hungary, though she kept her cool and watched to see as to how this would play-out.

The fighting had continued; not so much violent bloodshed as before but internal problems continued to plague the land until finally a solution was thought up. To appease both the Austrians and the Hungarians the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 was created; basically it created a dual-monarchy, one side being ruled by the Austrian Habsburg Empire and the other side by the Hungarians. For simplification of the two monarchies and to keep them from constantly feuding the two sides were controlled separately by two different parliaments. With this compromise Hungary grew in leaps and bounds economically as well as socially, allowing for far more growth and encouraging immigration as well. The effects of this being integration of different cultures onto Hungary herself, though this did make her grow stronger in power once more to be considered her old formidable self.

CANON UPDATE INFORMATION
A time of peace was not to be had as come 1914 everything fell apart with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. With Serbia’s actions a massive war broke out, the likes of which the world hadn’t seen before. Soon the battle erupted into what was considered a world war, Europe separating into two factions, the Axis Powers and the Central Powers. Hungary and Austria both sided with the Central Powers which consisted of Germany, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Most of the war was not a terribly big part of Hungarian history, though they continually tried to make progress to capture Italy. Though they could do no such thing due to the economic situation of Hungary deteriorating because of strikes in the factories as well as uprisings in the Hungarian military forces. Near the very end of the war, in 1918, Hungary’s union was dissolved with Austria, this leaving Hungary in something akin to ruin with uprisings and strikes continually going against what had been established.
Soon after this, things continued from bad to worse. The people took to revolting in Budapest, killing the current prime minister and driving the current king at the time to appoint a new prime minister in favor for the Entente powers and a leftist of the time. A little while later the parliament was dissolved and left the kingdom to become a republic, leaving the leftist prime minister as the provisional president of the new republic. During this time frame the government promised land reforms and free elections, but neither were carried out. This led to the king to relinquish his power of the throne.

In the same year, due to America’s president Woodrow Wilson and his pacifist stance, the current president for Hungary’s people took to disarming the military and taking a stance to outlaw all armed forces. Though this was a bad idea when soon after the nations around started arming themselves again. Soon enough the Entente powers began removing land from her, relocating it to different nations and leaving the nation weaker than before. Even during then, the government of the time tried to avoid too much removal and to keep the borders relatively untouched if they could convince their nation to remove herself from the company of both Austria and Germany, leaving her to secure as separate peace. Though, because of the union of Austria and Hungary previously the Entente considered her a part of the failure and demanded more to be taken, leading to France giving her a map consisting of what new boundaries were to be held.

In 1919 Hungary’s boss stepped down and handed over his power over to a coalition of Social Democrats and communists and the group quickly promised that Soviet Russia would help regain the lost borders. This led to Hungary’s boss slowly shifting over to the communist side of things, something that really did not sit well with the nation.

Though there wasn’t much she could do as the Communist Party of Hungary came to power and became her new bosses, proclaiming that they would now be known as the Hungarian Soviet Republic. During a coup attempt they also took a series of actions known as the Red Terror, murdering several hundred people and alienating much of the population. In a bit of a domestic backlash her bosses quickly fled to Austria, leaving Hungary’s Budapest occupied by Romania.

Soon came the Conservative Royalists, also known as the Whites, to torture and execute the communist and leftist people as well as launch programs against the Jews and claiming them as the reason for all the difficulties facing Hungary’s people. This also drove Romania away from the lands, though they took to pillaging everything on their way, leaving Hungary in a pretty ravished state for quite some time.

1920 didn’t come with any better favor, particularly the Treaty of Trianon. For this treaty there was even more taken from Hungary, around seventy-two percent of pre-WWI lands being taken away and redistributed again. Though one of Hungary’s newer bosses was quick to contest for a ratification of the treaty by strengthening the waning economy and building more relations with stronger nations; much to Hungary’s chagrin of having to deal with some of the ones proposed. With the Great Depression in the United States, Hungary ended up being affected by the drop in the economy as well. This led to a lower standard of living for her people and politics moving more in favor to the right, leading to the First Jewish Law in 1938 which limited Jewish involvement in the economy. But it was quickly followed by the Second Jewish Law in which was a lot harsher and almost completely restricted their involvement, partly due to the government switching to a more totalitarian nature.

Then came World War II, though Hungary did not participate on the side of the Axis Powers until 1941 during the invasion of Yugoslavia and joining the side of the Axis during that process. In the same year Hungary joined in with Germany for Operation Barbarossa, an operation to invade Soviet Russia, leading to Hungary declaring war on Russia. In 1943 Hungary had a devastating loss at the river Don and the government began negotiating with the Allied Forces to negotiate surrender. Though this quickly lead to Germany occupying the country due to trying to surrender to the Allies. In 1944 Hungary’s boss attempted to get them out of the war, only to be met by Germany replacing the government with a puppet one, keeping the people loyal to Germany until the very end of the war. Hungary also experienced another win on the Eastern front with the Battle of Debrecen, but it was quickly followed by an invasion by Russia which led to the Battle of Budapest, the bloodiest siege of the war in which Russia took control of the area there after the unconditional surrender of the Hungarian and German troops fighting there. World War II for Hungary was ended with her unconditional surrender in February of 1945 which left the nation devastated as 60% of the economy was destroyed and several loses of human life following in that wake.

When Germany fell out of power Hungary was quickly occupied by Russia, leaving her to become a satellite state of the other nation and slowly being corrupted towards communism. Though the changed brought her a new boss it also left with more losses of life as several hundred of people were executed and even more imprisoned and some of Hungary’s best intellectuals and officials being in that group. For this reason Hungary is considered to have the harshest dictatorship imposed upon her in Europe, despite what she might like.

However, this did not last too long as Hungary gained yet another prime minister, one promising free elections and began to let several anti-communists out of jail, but it wasn’t to last as Russia quickly removed and replaced him for his actions. With the newest Soviet appoint Hungary’s people slowly became more and more frustrated at his actions and their war-torn status, leading them to start the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, one of which the nation was all too happy to support. This had them temporarily withdraw from the Warsaw Pact, but it did not last long as Russia quickly retaliated with military force, easily putting down the revolution. What they hadn’t counted on, though, was millions of people passing through Hungary’s borders for the brief time they were opened.

Hungary’s current boss is one that when he came to power quickly took down the revolutionaries, imprisoning and executing those who were considered as such. But in his rule Hungary’s people have prospered from a high standard of living and a lax restriction on travel.
