I have a question for all organi- humans on board this vessel ( Read more... )

...I'm not very good at these kinds of questions.

I think the right answer is, you need to have a ghost? But, I don't think it's very clearly defined, and neither is how to tell if you have one or not.

First Mate Kage told me that if we're here on the ship as passengers, then it means that we have ghosts of our own. Even we AI do!

Do you want to be like the humans, Miss Z?

Neither am I.

[That's interesting.]

We do? I do not see how that is possible.

[Another pause.]

I...am uncertain. I do feel as though certain emotions would prove detrimental to my overall purpose.

[The unsaid 'BUT. . .' is loud and clear.]

I don't think Mister Marco's right at all. Emotions are just a benchmark humans use to evaluate us when we've become to internally complex to judge by the old methods!

In other words, it's a short-cut!

Of course, it's nice to have some emotions, right? It's a method of self-determination, I think. Like normal logic, except that it operates under different constraints.

Sound logic.

I would not know, I am as of yet unable to experience any kind of emotion.

[Not exactly the truth, but she doesn't perceive her flickers as emotions.]

Don't worry! Not everyone has to experience everything the same way, right?

The Major used to always say that diversity in mental states was way better than the other way! If we maintained a truly homogeneous mental state, then what's the point in existing as individualized entities at all!

I suppose that is a correct and fair assessment.

I am not exactly supposed to exist as an individualized entity myself - I am meant only for battle and the protection of my world. I was never meant to be a social creature, so I am at times uncertain as to what actions are correct in certain situations.

[Like, shooting Jinx in the foot probably wasn't the best reaction, oops.]

It was the same way with us, too! When we Tachikoma first individuated, the Major was so mad that she sent us back to the lab! Most of us were completely reprogrammed, and one even had its brain taken apart. That one seemed to enjoy it, though. It was really happy, at the end! Hey miss Z, do you think that that Tachikoma experienced death?

Some people are so lucky, huh?

[Are robotic mechanisms able to experience in the same way that humans perceive it? She isn't sure. She's died once, but it had felt like offlining.]

I think even reprogramming could be considered a form of death, depending on perception. If that were to be done to a human, it would be the complete removal of self. It would not be the same individual as it was prior, and is not the same Tachikoma as it was prior to the reformat.

It's true that Valkyrie was pretty different after that. I mean, it was still bossy, but it stopped collecting physical books. I guess it could have been keeping E-books in its buffer or something, but I never saw any.

It's a really hard problem, huh Miss Z? Hey, even if we don't really have ghosts, like Ironhide says, lets stick together, okay? We can't let bullies tell us we're worthless, just because we're not the same as them, right?

There were many AI beings like myself back home, though none had my capabilities. My creator told me stories of reformats, and took precautions to ensure I would personally never need one.

It seems as though it is more difficult than I initially imagined. [Does she have a 'ghost'? Interesting thought.]

No, we cannot - especially when we know better. You and I might be different, but we are far from worthless.
