I read a blurb somewhere awhile back about Gwyneth Paltrow's kid Apple, 16 months at the time, loving to listen to Jay Z. I can think of almost no vocalist or music I find more annoying, and when I read that, the first thought I had was, "...what the fuck? How'd your kid get such shitty taste in music?" (And then, too, I had to wonder about all the dropping of the N-bomb he does in his songs, and that sort of thing. 16 months is such an impressionable age for language and mimicry. Apple's so gonna be all, "What up nigga? Hook me up wit some more juice! I'd hit that" at her elite pre-school playgroup.)
Well, we went to the mall today, and as a result, I've had to search for and download a song by someone called "Bubba Sparks" for my 16-month-old's listening pleasure. There seems to be something about this age; they love the beats of hip hop and shit. That's the stuff Jake loves to dance to. He can't even fight it. If he's half-asleep in the car seat and he hears a song with a beat, he starts bopping half-asleep. The other day we were walking around the block, and some guy was cleaning out his car or something, and the car had a few doors open and was emitting some pretty cacophonous rap music with what Jake determined was a danceable beat. He stopped right there in the middle of the sidewalk and had to dance to his jam, for two minutes, before we could go on. The guy across the street with the car and the beats was laughing his ass off with us. Shit, now that I'm really thinking about it, that might have been '99 Problems,' by Jay Z.
Who are we to argue with a little kid's groove, I guess?
