The mysteries of Artemis

May 05, 2011 18:25

So. Lately I've been talking a lot about Artemis, who, among other things, is the goddess of women's mysteries, which involves that thing with the bleeding monthly thing that my body doesn't DO.

Today I saw the gynecologist, which reminded me to rage against the lithotomy position forever. Seriously, the exam can totally be done in other positions, and has been in the past, but nooo… let's expose the patient and make her feel uncomfortable, because the doctors like it better, and because we've done it that way for so long, there's clearly no reason to change! Also, it's super bad for labor. One doctor went so far as to say it was the second worst position for giving birth. The first? Standing on your HEAD. So this seriously needs to change.

Also, remember when I was like "I can use tea to regulate my cycle!"? Artemis popped into my head and called me a moron. I shouldn't be using the *calendar* for this. I should be using the MOON. Indeed, in cultures where folks don't use electric lighting at night, women tend to menstruate on the new moon. So, since I can exert stupid amounts of control on when my periods arrive, I'm going to start drinking tea 3 days before Rosh Chodesh and see how that works out.
