Tech Help Please!

i have received a new laptop with windows 7 and office 2010
my old comp has outlook 2003 and a lot of emails i need to transfer.
i tried grabbing the Outlook.pst file and putting it on an external drive, but it seems to be too big to copy (i get a message that the copy timed out, there is plenty of space on the drive).
i tried to export just one folder, only to get told it cannot access the folder (tried password and no password)
please help, i will be lost if i have to either say goodbye to all these e-mails or to keep this desktop running just so i can access old e-mails.
help if you can!
