Discussion 01: Why do you ship Bakoda?

Feb 19, 2009 16:33

OKAY, we have like.. .14 members! That's a good... 12 more than I expected! 8D Anywhoose, now that we've expanded some, I thought it'd be a cool idea to start up some discussions. I would call them weekly discussions, but I'm a loser that would have a hard time guaranteeing that they would, indeed, be weekly. But I am going to try! I promise! (And if anyone has any discussion ideas, please share them with me!)

DISCUSSION #1: Why do you ship Bakoda?

My long answer:
"After I was wounded, your father carried me to this abbey."

THE END.

Oh... You want a more detailed explanation? Fine.

WARNING: MY OPINIONS ARE RANDOMLY MIXED IN WITH CANON FACTS. SORRY IF THIS CONFUSES ANY ONE, BUT I DID TRY TO DISTINGUISH CANON FROM FANON. ACTUALLY, ON SECOND THOUGH, THIS IS MOSTLY FANON SINCE NEITHER BATO OR HAKODA HAVE MUCH SCREEN TIME. *SAD FAIS*

Where shall I start? :D Honestly, I shouldn't like Bakoda as much as I do. I normally like angst-ridden pairings over the BFFs/fluffy stuff.

Anywhoose, I think Bato and Hakoda have the strongest bond out of any characters shown in the series, whether you regard them as friends or a romantic couple (both of which I'm fine with, actually). According to "Bato of the Water Tribe", the two have been best friends since they were young and, in my opinion, Bato began loving Hakoda at this point, though whether he realized this or not, I'm not sure. Why else would he let Hakoda talk him into stupid ideas (I'm refering to the 'Artic Hippo' incident. "It was your father's idea. He just dragged me along... actually the hippo did the dragging...")? This one-sided love continued throughout their lives, IMO, at least up until the point where Bato was wounded. If there was ever a time for Hakoda to realize how strongly he cared for Bato, that was it.

Secondly, Bato treats Katara and Sokka as though they were his own kids, and they, in return, treat him like a father figure. You may be wondering where I got this idea and what the hell that has to do with the pairing. Allow me to explain: When Bato starts to explain what Ice Dodging is to Aang, he specifically says that it's something fathers do with their sons. Then seeing how depressed Sokka looked over having never been since Hakoda left before he was old enough, he offered to take him instead. Note that Sokka didn't refuse. This leads me to believe that, if Hakoda and Bato were in a relationship, Sokka wouldn't have a problem with it at all. (Katara maybe... but she has deep-rooted mommy issues.) As a sidenote: in "The Guru", the way Bato says "You're definitely your father's son." after the 'stink-n-sink' joke makes me think of how a mother talks when her son has done something embarassing (usually as a picked up habit of their father).

"You're definitely your father's son."

Wait a second, you say. Wasn't Hakoda married to Kya? Well duh. I'm not going to deny that. I'm also not going to deny that Hakoda loved her, because he did. A lot. And his heart was broken when she died, but that doesn't make him straight. After all, Bato would have been the one to be there for him when he was grieving her death, right? Right. Dead wife does not a straight man make.

Also note that, during "Day of Black Sun", it was Bato helping Hakoda walk to the subs. This was probably his way of repaying Hakoda for the time he carried him when he was injured, but it was still incredibly sweet. It appeared to be an automatic response, a "Hakoda's injured, I have to help him" kind of thing. On another side note: I squealed like the fangirl I am when I saw Bato standing with Hakoda during the finale. As another side note related to the previous sidenote: I firmly believe that, after being forced to be seperated from his children during "The Southern Raiders", he convinced the rest of the group to help him rescue Bato the Water Tribe Warriors, but mostly Bato.

Insert moment of fangirlish squeeing.... and Magical Haru.

Now more "proof" in the form of pictures:

Note how when Aang reveals that he had the letter from Hakoda, Bato just looks SAD, whereas Katara and Sokka are shocked and angry, respectively.

Again. Sad Bato is sad. I wanna give him a hug. D:
Bato: You mean I could've already been on my way to see Hakoda? D:

Okay... I haven't been able to figure out why both Hakoda AND Bato were up on the observation deck... I like to think that they were making out Hakoda was asking Bato for advice on what to do about Katara and her recent attitude.

CANON BAKODA. HELLS YEAH.

Also this. XD
