I decided to enlarge the front perennial garden, mostly because it needed new border, and i figured if i was going to dig down enough to put in a new border, i might as well make it worth it.  There was really no room for new plants, and all of the plants on the edge were crowded by  the border, so a-digging i went.

i was also hit with the some complusion, since as i digged i found rotted roots from a long-gone tree (a pine, the neighbor-who-talks-garden with me said).  so when i hit some roots i would dig and dig until there were no more rotted roots in the digging patch.  so the garden is bigger, but that just means more room for more perennials.  and more to weed, also, i guess, but that's ok.

i started adding irises to the garden last year--i just love how they look.  and come autumn i want to put in some daffodil bulbs, but i don't know what i want to add this summer.  i need to stop by my new favorite local nursery and see waht strikes my fancy.

the downside to all this is my hands are suffering.  i already wash them a ton at work, but this dirt and digging and soil packing has added to the torture!  cracks and blisters galore...
