There is something both flattering and incredibly frustrating about being "known" at work. I certainly don't advertise my services, yet somehow people keep finding me. Just yesterday I got a call from someone I've never heard of who said that someone else I've never heard of referenced me as a good contact for a project they're working on. They weren't wrong, I was probably one of the best people they could reach out to, but it bothers me that there's some sort of grapevine out there filtering projects down to me.
I then proceeded to spend about 2 hours of my day on calls about that project. I got in over my head on something that isn't really my problem. This is a department that's related to a department that is loosely related to my department. I don't know, I just have this bad habit of getting involved with things. And it's not completely unrelated, in fact, if it works out like I want, it'll be really nice, but it's still really irritating to have it get to me in that manner.
