And when I'm done, the carpet smells like fresh baked cookies

I've never been excited about a vacuum before. It's not the type of thing I would think I would be excited about. Yet, I am. I am excited about our new vacuum. It's a Dyson. It's not just a vacuum, it's a status symbol. I have envied the Dyson from afar ever since I first saw its ads and its lofty price. Now I own one.

I like cleaning. It's something I've always enjoyed. Well, I don't know if it's the cleaning I enjoy, but I certainly like the results. One of the places I enjoy cleaning is the bathroom. I know most people would say, "Ew, yuck!" but hear me out; when you're done in the bathroom, the delta from before and after is pretty large. You can see your results. No more water stains on the mirror, no more toothpaste in the sink, no more hair on the floor and counter, etc... There's a noticeable difference.

For that same sort of reasoning I've always disliked vacuuming. Unless you have really filthy floors, you probably won't see results. Though, if you get really close to the floor (like crawling around on it) you can see a difference most of the time. I rarely crawl around though, so I never really felt like I accomplished anything by vacuuming.

The Dyson has changed that. Forget for a moment the "never loses suction" hype and stuff. I'll come back to that. Let's start with the clear collection chamber. When I get done vacuuming I can now see my results in the clear cylinder. It's both horrifying and exciting. "Ew. That came out of my carpet" and "Awesome! That came out of my carpet!"

So, vacuuming is now a results driven process. Plus, since I live in a desert, the cylinder kind of looks like it has sand art in it. Plus, hair and dust and stuff. But it's really neat to see the crap in there.

Now, this is where I feel kind of bad. Is it possible the old vacuum did the same thing, I just couldn't see the results? That if I had cut open the collection bag, I would see the same thing? I don't think so. When you just put your hand near the suction opening you can feel the difference. The Dyson feels like it's trying to rip flesh from bones. The old vacuum just wanted to give you a hickey.

At this point, I love vacuuming. I really do. Plus, since I have that 10 month old, it's really nice to know he's not crawling around through a lot of dust and other debris. I have a vacuum I love and more peace of mind.
