I was having a short conversation with on another entry about Orlan with musouka_ningyou and I made the comment, ‘I don’t consider her feminist’ and then I thought-wait, what do I mean by this? What is Orlan not? What would make her ‘feminist’? Her actions, behaviors, philosophy? And who am I to decide who wants the title ‘feminist’ and what that title means ( Read more... )

Yes I noticed that too, it's nice though, I haven't met anyone who thinks like me at all.

Hahaha, I am exactly like that with fights as well. Which is why I can't get along with a lot of girls. Females especially expect their friends to have their backs at all times. I'm horribly objective, I have a few funny stories about me being too objective...and got myself into trouble hahaha. Maybe I'll post about them one day :3 I don't know if it was the same for you, but people had to literally tell me I was too objective/logical. I didn't realize it on my own, I just knew I thought differently from other people.

And how rori of you to give an example about cake! Lol!

To me, Orlan can be feminist if she wants :D I'm neutral toward her now, I think she is fascinating but I don't like how she sensationalizes plastic surgery. That's not the way I would send the message anyway. I do like how she kind of flips the industry on it's ass though and does ridiculous things to herself.

Feminism does have a horrible name! I used to be wary saying I was a feminist or that I was involved in Gender Studies at all. Which is silly! Because I am trying to work in the public sphere after all, and change it...so I shouldn't be afraid of it. Now I just try to educate people when they ask me about it, a lot of people don't even know what Gender Studies is.

How interested in feminism are you? I would suggest you check out The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir if you haven't already read it. She's a french philosopher from the 1940s [I think?] and writes about women in a very interesting way. I can even lend it to you if you'd like. It's a beast of a book but even just reading the intro is worth it.
