je voudrais six abricots, raia told the man with the nicest looking aprictots. she is aways in charge here, because she has taken french in school and i know about fifteen words all together.
six kilos? he asked, laughing.
no, just six. he picked them out carefully and asked where we were from.
san francisco, we answered. the united states.
do you like your president? he asked. this is always the first question we get when people realize we're not canadian.
no, we said. even i had understood the question.
here in france, we like the american people but not the president bush. he smiled again.
moi aussi, we said simultaneously. me too.

sometimes these things are so simple. apricots or mangoes, a country or its president. but sometimes traveling makes me come up with harder questions. like how a world becomes globally united without being globalized. or what a christian god would say if i told him how much catholic churches remind me of this girl i was in love with once.
