seriously though

required reading (or, the best of, in some sort of order):

burning the sea, by sarah pemberton strong
(no one seems to have heard of this book, but it's honestly one of the best books i've read in a long time.)

leaves of grass, by walt whitman
(if you haven't read whitman, you need to. no questions asked.)

a blind man can see how much i love you, by amy bloom
(my favorite book of short stories by my favorite short story author.)

the things they carried, by tim o'brian
(a sometimes painfully true look at the vietnam war and the nature of a war story.)

persepolis, by marjane satrapi
(it's a little like maus- a comic book style with a very serious tone. it's about a girl growing up in iran during the muslim revolution.)

"the gimmick", by dael orlandersmith
(more like poems than plays, these monologues and dialogs are unlike anything else.)

"stop kiss", by diana son
(sweet and well-written. good characterizations, even just on paper.)

the handmaid's tale, by margaret atwood
(in my opinion, the most seamless example of atwoods interesting story-telling style. it's pretty chilling at times, as a forward looking piece written in the past.)

me talk pretty one day, by david sedaris
(just simply hilarious.)

the little prince, by antoine de saint-exupéry
(another thing everyone ought to read at some point.)

interpreter of maladies, by jhumpa lahri
(i've only just started this one, but i think it's excellent so far.)
