The armored black automobile was two miles outside of downtown Gotham before the driver spoke.
“We were lucky,” he growled.
“I’ll say we were! Did you see that big guy split in two? Holy twin set! Lucky each twin was only half as strong, right?”
“You froze for a second.”
“I know. I was thinking he was just a regular mook. But that extra second turned out good, ’cause if I’d swung the way I was planning I’d have gone right between the two of him into the wall!”
“You let the gunman get a bead on you.”
“But he missed. Another bit of luck!”
“We can’t rely on luck.”
“I know. That’s why they call it ‘luck’.”
“I don’t think you understand how serious this is.”
“I understand! We could have been in real trouble-”
“Fatal trouble.”
“Like I said.”
“You’re taking this too lightly. I think you may need another month of training before your next patrol.”
“What? That’s so unfair!”
“We weren’t prepared enough. We weren’t alert enough. I need to keep you safe, and tonight we both got lucky.”
“Oh, like you’ve never gotten lucky before. Like Two-Face’s coin never fell your way. Like the Penguin never missed seeing you in the dark because his monocle was greasy. Like you never stumbled across the right clue at the right time. . . . Well?”
“Those situations are different. I could take advantage of them because I was prepared.”
“And I was prepared enough to take those twins down! Or didn’t you notice?”
“You got lucky.”
“I know!”
“You need more training.”
“I never said I didn’t! I’m practicing all the time! I’m ready for more practice tonight, right after I put everything about that mook in the files. Just before he split, I saw his eyes go cross-eyed-how’s that for useful information? But I’m not staying home just because it got a little weird tonight.”
“I’m still not happy with your attitude. You’re acting happy that we were lucky.”
“I’m happy we beat those guys.”
“By luck.”
“Okay, I’m happy we got lucky! Because it worked out! Because the bad guys are in jail, and the credit union is safe, and we’re both fine. Why shouldn’t I be happy? Why shouldn’t you be happy?”
“Because we were lucky.”
