Bruce was a veteran when it came to things like hand-to-hand combat, deductive reasoning, using a grappling hook, disappearing with out a trace, and more. He was adept at anything and everything.
But the young Dick Grayson? Not so much.
And, yes, one day he would be a great veteran in crime fighting, like his mentor was, but today was not that day.
Today he couldn't even bring himself to wear his suit.
Sure, he was a great acrobat, and sure, he had been training with Bruce for months in preparation to join Batman in his crusades, but he just didn't feel like he was ready to embark on his first misson as Robin, sidekick to Gotham City's Dark Knight. Especially not with how high Bruce's expectations were for the thirteen year old. Or how high Dick had preceived them to be.
"You'll be fine," Bruce tried reassuring his young ward, but Dick was positive that Bruce was just trying to convince himself that allowing Dick out of the cave wouldn't be a mistake he would later regret. For the rest of his life.
"I don't know... Maybe I should sit this one out. And just, yanno, train some more," Dick said with the intentions of somehow weaseling his way out of yet another of Bruce's offers to go out on patrol with him.
"You've missed the last four nights," he pointed out.
"Well, then what's another night?" Dick asked, stalling for more time so he could think of any better excuse as to why he couldn't possibly leave the cave.
Bruce raised an eyebrow. He figured that when it would come time for Dick to put on his Robin suit, he would've jumped at the chance to wear it rather than avoiding the suit like the plague like he had been doing. "I think you're ready," he decided. His mind was set. He was going to get that boy out on patrol tonight.
Dick sighed. "If you say so..."
"I do. Be in your suit and in the Batmobile in less than five minutes," Bruce ordered.
Dick crossed his arms. He wasn't above sticking his tongue out at the brooding figure, but he figured he was on pretty thin ice with the man. "Fine. Bossypants," Dick mumbled as he watched Bruce get into the Batmobile, presumably to wait for Dick.
Dick himself walked into a small room where various batsuits were kept in case Bruce ever had a need for them. He stood and stared bitterly at what would be his Robin suit. There was a red tunic with the letter R inscribed on it and a pair black pants with boots and gloves to match. His cape was black as well, but only on the outside. The outer lining and the inside of it was a pale yellow. The utility belt matched the inside of the cape and had a random assortment of Batman approved goodies in each of its small compartments He and Bruce had spent countless hours designing the suit, but now it looked absolutely ridiculous. All of this seem ridiculous now...
"Here goes nothing," Dick muttered to himself as he began to put the suit on one piece at a time.
When he finally had his last boot on, he looked at his reflection in the mirror. He looked...cool. No. He looked awesome. In his mind, there was only one person dressed better than he was, and that man was sitting in the driver's seat of the most high-tech car the world has ever seen.
"You, my good friend, look incredible," he complimented himself.
"Pardon the intrusion, Master Dick," Alfred said from standing in front of the door frame, holding a silver platter with something black on it, "but I do believe you are forgetting something."
Dick inspected what was on the platter a little more closely before quickly realizing what it was. "My mask! Thank you," he told Alfred as he put his domino mask on. "How do I look?"
Alfred smiled like a proud parent. "Like the sidekick of Batman, Master Dick."
Dick scoffed a little at the remark. "I prefer partner," he informed the butler before heading off to the Batmobile.

Author's Note: I had a ridiculously hard time writing something for this theme which is why I went in the opposite direction and showed Bruce as the vet and Dick, the main focus, as the rookie. And my inability to write for this theme is why it's fairly short.
The outfit is totally Young Justice inspired because I think it's cool and stuff. And I know Robins are normally excited to break out onto the scene, but this idea was calling to me. So, sorry if it's been done before :S
