Okay. So. The big news, of course, is that Michael Vick was indicted yesterday on two felony counts, resulting from a three-month investigation into an illegal dog fighting ring that took place on his property in Surrey, VA. The upshot of this is that, if convicted, Vick could get (I believe) as much as 6 years in prison and a $350,000 fine (which is, if not nothing, then still not all that much for someone who makes as much money as him). If convicted and sentenced like that, this could very well end Michael Vick's football career. And if convicted, it should. Dog fighting is a disgusting, offensive activity and it should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Michael Vick is innocent until proven guilty, just like everyone else in this country (well, everyone who isn't labeled an enemy combatant). I don't know all the facts in this case, though what I have heard sounds pretty damning. However, I will continue to presume his innocence (if not be particularly convinced of it) until it is proven otherwise.
That said, Roger Goodell needs to come out within the next week and suspend Vick for the season. If Pacman Jones and Chris Henry can be suspended for being indicted, so can Michael Vick. That he is one of the premiere players (at least on a marketing level) in the NFL should make no difference. To maintain any credibility, Goodell needs to act swiftly and severely, to show that no exceptions will be made for star players.
On a much less important side of this story, does anybody else think the Falcons will be picking up Daunte Culpeper in the near future? Or will they stick with Harrington?
