Dear Joe Gibbs,

I am aware, as are many other people, that you have faith in Mark Brunell, the current starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins. I believe that Mark Brunell is a very good, kind individual. I know that he is a God fearing man who goes to church seven days a week, and that this kind of thing is important to you.

But time and time again, Mark Brunell has shown that he no longer has the physical tools to compete in the NFL. He cannot make the throws required with enough accuracy or consistency to be considered a good quarterback. He checks down to his under option faster than any other quarterback in the league, and he routinely throws five-yard dump-offs when the Redskins are on 3rd and long. These are not the hallmarks of a great quarterback, or even a good one. These are the hallmarks of an aging quarterback who doesn't know when to hang it up. It is telling that his best game this season was the one when he had to skip three days of practice, so hadn't worn out his arm come gameday.

So this is my plea. The team has lost 5 games, and is only seven games into the season. I know everybody points out that last year we were 5-6 and came back to make the playoffs. Well, we'd have to win 3 out of the next 4 games to get to 5-6, and our schedule is just too tough to make that feasible. The season is over. There is no salvaging it. Please, I implore you, let Jason Campbell take over at quarterback. I know you think he's not ready (because he's had 6 offensive coordinators in the last 6 years, which is a valid concern, I'll admit). But the season is over. There is no reason not to let Jason Campbell get used to playing. Get him used to the speed of the game. Let him build confidence. Let the fans see the future of the team, because honest to Christ, if Mark Brunell is announced as the starting quarterback for the 2007 seven season, this town will burn.

And for God's sake, don't trade away any more draft picks. I know this is Vinnie Cerrato's fault, but man. Depth is gained not by signing, but by drafting. So try it!

Sincerely,

A devoted fan
