Look! Up in the sky!

"Leaping from outcrop to boulder to boulder to outcrop, he makes his way ever farther down the canyon. He doesn't notice when yet another long jump becomes a very high jump, but all of the sudden he's rising straight up into the air, the clouds. A small tickling electrical charge starts pulsating around his body, his velocity becoming so extravagant so quickly that his shirt and trousers and shoes all seethe from the friction. Without conscious thought, Clark tucks his head toward his left shoulder, makes a fist with his left hand, and his body immediately follows that direction. A few dozen starlings burst apart just moments before he passes through the flock.

He can FLY!"

That's from the back cover to a new novel called 'IT'S SUPERMAN!' by Tom DeHaven (author of the DERBY DUGAN series which I highly recommend to anyone who loves comics and comic strips) about Superman's early years but instead of a modern retelling of the origin ala' SMALLVILLE (which is ass, by the way) 'IT'S SUPERMAN' takes place in the 30's and 40's which is really cool. It starts out with Clark Kent growing up in Depression-era Kansas and discovering his powers and coming to terms with who (or, rather, WHAT) he is. I'm only about an eighth of the way through it so far (just bought it today) but I'm really impressed. I really like to portrayal of Lois as sort of a tough-talking gal instead of the 'damsel in distress' thing. She reminds me a lot of the way Katherine Hepburn was portrayed in 'THE AVIATOR'.

I've always said that if I had the opportunity to do a Superman movie, I would have it take place in the thirties or forties like a live-action version of the old Fleischer cartoons. I'll let you know if it holds up all the way through.
