Author’s Note: So here’s the thing. The chapters of this fic average at about 1000 words. Some go a little over, some go a lot under. I think one is 600 words. Complain and I’ll start quoting cazmalfoy’s favourite word to you :P j/k. Enjoy the fic and when the chapters are particularly short I might give you two in one day. Hell, I might do that anyway.
Disclaimer: I sure as heck don't own Torchwood, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer or ... Hell, I don't own anything except Libby. And I don't own this particular storyline. A lot of the dialog and stuff is stolen snagged from the episodes not because I’m lazy but because I love the episodes so much. But, remember, this is told from a Magic and Mayhem point of view, so a lot of it is different and adjusted and hopefully worth the read. Plus, it’s a fic. I’ll stop rambling on about how this isn’t mine now. Coz it’s not. Obviously. I’m not RTD. I ain’t even a man.

Previous stories and chapters can be found here.

Posted for kerfluffle who bribed me. Admittedly, I haven't received said bribe yet, but I have Faith that I will. But I'm going to bed early so otherwise this wouldn't get posted. Hope you like!

Chapter 4

09:41

Libby blinked hard and opened her eyes, focussing on the sight that greeted her. She was lying on the inside of the roof of her car, which was upside down, and she could feel blood trickling down the side of her face. She lifted her head up, painfully, and looked through the broken windscreen. There was fire on the street outside and she could hear, in the distance, robotic voices shouting, “Exterminate!” and screams.

She propped herself up on her elbows, biting her lip to keep from crying out as pain ripped through her body, and manoeuvred herself around to reach for her hands free kit, retrieving her phone.

It fell to bits in her hands.

She bit back a sob of despair and looked at her palms; there was glass in them, and they were bleeding heavily, as was her head, she observed via a reflection in a shard of broken glass.

She reached for the edge of the car, dragging herself towards the broken window with difficulty and smashing what was left of the glass to make sure she wouldn't injure herself further clambering out. She pulled herself through, raising her head up as soon as it had emerged and checking the street. There was a large pepper-pot creature in the distance (a Dalek?) and she swallowed as she pulled herself to her feet and realised, with a moment of agony, that her leg was broken.

The Dalek’s eyestalk moved, the blue lens focussing on her. “Exterminate!” Her eyes widened and she looked in front of her; there was an alleyway there. She knew it lead towards the hub as she could see the water tower in the distance. She saw a flash and dropped onto her front on the floor as a flash of light passed over her. She whimpered, softly, as pain shot through her ribs. She’d broken one ... or two ... or more. She didn’t know anymore. She pushed herself up to her feet again and limped towards the alleyway in time to hear the Dalek shout again.

Light flashed behind her as she dived into the alleyway and limped as far as she could, panting with exertion, the pain in her leg, ribs and palms becoming almost unbearable.

She turned corners three times then stopped, leaning against the wall and gasping for breath, wishing she had her phone. She looked down the alleyway, gratified to discover the Dalek hadn’t followed her, then up the way she was heading. She could still see the water tower and that just made her more determined. With a grunt of pain, she pushed off from the wall and started limping again.

“Ianto,” Buffy said, walking across the hub and crouching down in front of him where he was sat on the sofa. “She’ll be fine.”

Ianto closed his eyes and clenched his fists. “I’ve been trying to phone. I can’t get through. What if ... what if they’ve ...”

Buffy reached out and put her hand over his fist. “She’ll be fine,” she reiterated, squeezing his hand then standing up and walking over to Jack, who was looking, panicked at the computer screen. “What’s going on?” she demanded.

“The Valiant’s down!” he told her.

“What are these ‘Dalek’s’?” Buffy asked.

“Some of the worst creatures ... they’re bred for war. To kill everything not Dalek.” He hit the computer screen when it flickered.

“Don't hit my computers!” Tosh said from nearby. “The airforce are retreating over North Africa! And Daleks landing in Japan,” she announced, just as freaked as Jack.

“When you said we’re dead,” Buffy said, looking at him carefully, “why did you say we?”

“Daleks killed me the first time. For all I know they could do it again,” Jack said, hitting the computer again, just to have Tosh yell at him. Buffy heard Willow saying soothing things to her, but they weren’t helping. Tosh was just as afraid as the rest of them.

“Martha sure as hell chose a bad time to go away,” Buffy said, then, trying to lighten the mood, “Couldn’t she have gone away for Christmas instead?”

Jack sent her a wan smile before running across the hub into his office to look at the computer in there, which Xander was using. “We’ve lost contact with the Prime Minister’s plane,” the young man told him.

“Jack! Manhattan!” Faith shouted, tossing the phone across the room. Jack caught it swiftly and held it to his ear. “Martha! Get out of there!”

Buffy watched him, stricken, as Martha gave her reasons why she couldn’t. “Martha, you have to!” Buffy shouted at the phone.

“I’ve got a job to do!” Martha’s voice came down the line.

Buffy kicked the desk. “They’re targeting military bases,” she said.

“She’s next,” Faith announced from nearby. “Martha’s next.”

“Doctor Jones, you will come with me, Project Indigo is being activated. Quick march!” a male voice said at Martha’s end.

Jack locked his eyes with Buffy’s and she knew instantly that was a bad thing.

“It’s not safe!” Jack yelled. “Martha, you can’t. We need you!”

“Jack, what’s Project Indigo?” Buffy asked, quietly.

Jack kept his eyes on hers but didn’t answer.

“But we can’t use Project Indigo,” Martha’s voice said. “It hasn’t even been tested, Sir, we don't even know if it works!”

There was the sound of extermination in the distance and Buffy’s eyes widened. “What is that?” she breathed.

“Death,” Jack replied.

“What’s going on?” Ianto had arrived in the office, pale, but determined.

“They’re activating Project Indigo, but it’s not safe!” Jack repeated.

“What is it?” Ianto asked.

Jack ignored him, continuing to stare at Buffy, a non-verbal conversation going on. Her eyes asking if there was anything they could do, Jack’s saying no.

“Put it on,” the male voice over the phone said. “Fast as you can!”

Buffy could almost hear Martha’s indignation in her breathing, mainly because she shared it.

“Martha, I’m ordering you - don't use Project Indigo!” Jack said, firmly.

“You take your orders from U.N.I.T., Doctor Jones, not Torchwood,” the male voice said.

“I worked for Torchwood, Sir!” Martha retorted. “Until you requisitioned me back.”

“And now you work for us again,” the voice said.

“Why me?” Martha demanded.

“You’re our only hope of finding the Doctor,” the man Buffy had mentally nicknamed ‘bossy git’ in New York said. “But failing that, if no help is coming ... then with the power invested in me by the Unified Intelligence Task Force, I authorise you to take this.” There was a pause and Martha gasped. “The Osterhagen key.”

Buffy tilted her head at Jack, silently asking ‘What’s the Osterhagen key?’ He shook his head that he didn’t know.

“I can’t take that, Sir,” Martha said, her voice striking fear into Buffy’s heart.

“What’s going on?” Faith asked, walking over to Buffy. She shook her head for quiet.

“You know what to do, for the sake of the human race,” bossy git said.

There was the sound of more extermination and he said, “Doctor Jones, good luck!”

Everyone in Jack’s office yelled, “Martha! Don't!” at the same moment.

“Bye everyone,” Martha said, a tinge of regret in her tone. Then the line went dead.

There was a moment of total silence in the office. No one moved, no one spoke, no one even breathed. There was just silence. Then Buffy asked, “Jack, tell me, what’s Project Indigo?” She watched as Ianto walked around the desk and put his hand on his husband’s shoulder for comfort.

“An experimental teleport salvaged from the Sontarans,” he said, “but they haven’t got coordinates or stabilisation.”

“Where is she?” Ianto asked.

“Scattered in the ...”

“Right here.”

All the heads turned to stare at Martha, stood in the doorway of the office.
