I'm capitalist, and I like it. (struck becos of a point well made) I don't quite care about global warming or deficiencies of natural resources, and if i own a car, i'd drive all around town and not even care that it's helping the environment suffer (well, also partly cos i'm not paying for it now. whatever..).. There are green capitalists (Switzerland/me) and ungreen capitalists (you) and then there are green socialists (sweden) and ungreen socialists (soviet union). The list goes on!
But you can't have it both ways! That means that you have subconsciously agreed to non-subsidised govt housing.. and of course, no tax relief on your rent.

You mean it in the conserve water sense? I.e. if you waste something, the whole country goes thirsty?

but just to set the record straight.. i'm okay with no tax break from rent. it's only because i can't even use part of my cpf to pay for my taxes or loan.

but your CPF is forced savings imposed by the govt for your retirement and 'emergencies'. It also is a great source of free funding for the govt. That's why Singapore is the largest capital investment in places like New Yrok, London (remember the GIC).
that's why you can't use it to pay your taxes. It's like telling th govt to use it's own cash flow to pay itself!
And it's horrible that you can't use your CPF to pay off your school loan, but that's because the govt doesn't want to make it easy for you (and your boss) to subsidise your overseas education. it's money flowing out of the country and it doesn't benefit NUS at all.
