 Application:

[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]

Name: Shinichi Okazaki
Age: 15- claims 18
Gender: Male
Fandom: Nana, manga
Timeline: Around chapter 56, after Reira breaks up with Shin, but some time before he gets caught with pot.
History: http://nanamanga.wikia.com/wiki/Shinichi_%22Shin%22_Okazaki
Shin was possibly the child of an affair between his Japanese mother and an American while his parents lived in America. His mother killed herself shortly after his birth, and because his father never knew if Shin was really his son or not, he never could really show much love towards Shinichi. This pushed Shin to music, and somewhere along the way, a woman named Ryoko taught Shin how to “treat” a lady. He began using his skills with women to get a roof over his head for the night and would sell the gifts they gave him for money for food and other things he needed. He went to school with Nobu, and when they lost their bassist, Ren, Nobu introduced Shin to the band. He proved to be an amazing bassist, and was quickly accepted into the band.

Character Personality: Shin has a dark past, and it’s one that he doesn’t like showing or talking about. In the manga, we often get to see the more honest, colder side of him, but he prefers to put on a happy mask and act in a way that he thinks will keep others in a good mood. He’s smooth with his words, and usually knows just what to say to make someone happy, or at least to not offend them. He will often put on a child-like front, acting curious and a bit innocent, though his maturity still often shows through with quick and sharp insides and pointed questions that get to the root of things quickly. Acquaintances get to see this side of him more often than not, but he will settle down quickly and act mature in a serious situation, like an interview, or meeting people like record company spokespeople or interviewers.

His friends get to see a bit of a different side, however: colder and more jaded. He’ll make mean jokes, even if he is careful to not say anything that would be too harsh in jest. When he’s upset with them or thinks that they are being immature he doesn’t keep himself from pointing out harsh realities and using his words to cut into their weakest points. If made extremely mad by even a stranger they might get to see a flash of his cold and sharp anger as well if they cross one of his friends; for example, when he coldly threw his drink at Takumi when Takumi spoke of Hachi, whom he thinks of as a surrogate mother, disrespectfully, upsetting Noubu.

Despite how harsh he can be, in truth he’s actually pretty soft-hearted. He’s extremely loyal to his friends, and most of his tough behavior is covering up his own broken heart. He has had a hard life so far, apparently an illegitimate child with a father who couldn’t love him. He developed a jaded outlook on the world, having been mostly exposed to its focus on desires- including sex- and money. He sees that most of the world is obsessed with appearances, while constantly dealing under the table to cheat and take whatever they can for themselves. While he usually sees the world this way, he doesn’t want to. That is part of why he presses these harsh viewpoints and observations on his friends, hoping that they will tell him he’s wrong. Unfortunately, he’s usually right, even if the feelings driving the actions aren’t quite as cold as he makes them sound.

His effectiveness at using calm words to cut into people harsher than a raised voice ever could comes from his ability to read people. It isn’t that he is a perfect expert at reading body language or facial expressions, but that he knows personality types, and how different words and ideas would affect each kind of person. With that, he doesn’t need to read someone’s words expertly to guess what their motivations might be, though in a way, this is just as effective and a skill on its own. It does, however, lead him to see the worst in people. This doesn’t seem to destroy his hope though, as he repeatedly expects the best out of his friends, rather than the worst.

Character Abilities: As discussed in the personality section, Shin is extremely perceptive when it comes to possible motivations and drives of other people, however his strongest ability might be his hope. He knows to expect the worst of a person, but he does always hope that they will do better. While he’s rather broken because of his upbringing, this hope helps him to keep going against all odds. His other drive is his music. His very first time playing with Nana and Nobu he got them to both stop playing with his skill and how much like the guitarist of a platinum-hit band he was able to play, and he has only improved since then. He also is very skilled at romantics and smooth-talking thanks to a keen intellect.

Character Weaknesses: Shin is thin. Not so thin that it’s unhealthy, but there isn’t very much muscle to his body. He’s also emotionally weak in many ways. He is sensitive to matters of families and of relationships and love. He was able to find love with Reira, but only after having her hire him as a prostitute. It took him time to realize he didn’t want to be paid for it, and even then had trouble with the concept. In addition to romantic challenges, Shin has trouble with trust. This one isn’t quite as crippling, since he can learn to trust well enough, but he expects acquaintances and strangers to always be attempting to gain something from him. He also has a temper in his own way. It isn’t easy to incite, but it results in destructive, hurtful words, and calm, collected, but over the top actions like pouring his drink onto someone or making Nana feel that she’s too reliant on Ren. Perhaps the worst part of that is that he doesn’t realize quite how strong his words can be. On top of all that, Shin lacks motivation for just about anything. He does what he enjoys and what comes easy to him. The only reason he even practices his bass is because it's fun. Though he does want to get better, he just lacks drive. It is likely due to an overarching mild depression.

[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]

What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign? Shin doesn’t have any supernatural powers so his skills will carry over.

What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign? Because he won’t have the support of his friends, at first he will be more emotionally vulnerable until he finds some friends he feels can back him up. For the same reason, there is a chance his depression may get worse.

Keeping the game’s premise in mind, please give us a brief explanation of your plans for your character in Soul Campaign.

Shin is a bit of a problem child, and has a high potential to end up in a lot of trouble. The truth is that he could really turn around and learn to see the good in the world, and even straighten out with some support. At first he’ll try to work in the red-light district as a Host, but his real passion will be playing music. He’ll use that job to buy an amp, and might even look for other people to start a band with. If he can start using that to pay for the things he likes to buy, and finds friends that can give him the companionship he normally finds with his job, he might even start seeing the world as a better place. The addition of the war might darken his outlook at first, but with friends, I can see their ability to stay happy even in this desperate situation teaching him to think of things a bit more brightly.

[ WEAPON ONLY SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Weapon: Shin isn’t a leader, he’s happy to just do what he enjoys, and doesn’t particularly care how that happens. He is just happy to be a part of the band instead of the one controlling how it runs. As a weapon, he would be in a similar situation. He isn't exactly very motivated, and needs a meister behind him to push him. If he was a meister, he would not be likely to find a weapon, or once he did, he would not likely want to do much with him or her. As a weapon, he would willingly go along with what a meister he liked wanted.

What is your character's Weapon form?: Shin will take the form of an electric bass guitar.
Soul Amp- When his meister plays him in tune for a prolonged period (at least 3 measures) their resonance increases, however any off-key note or mistake will break their resonance. Before this ability activates, off-key notes and mistakes only act as a disruption rather than crashing the resonation completely.
Star Power- Tilt the guitar up to activa- When resonation is high, this attack creates a tune that can be focused to entrance a selected group of people that this is focused on, limiting their actions. Easier to perform tasks would be less effected, while difficult tasks would become near-impossible, but the effectiveness is also dependent on the target's will. At it's lowest level, it can effect three adjacent people.
Soul Riff- When resonation is solid, chords can be used as a force attack effecting the target's ability to breathe and disrupting pulse. It is non-lethal attack, but if done properly with a high enough resonation it could cause a lot of pain. This can only be used after Soul Amp has been put into effect. This can only effect one person at a time.
While not precisely a special ability, Shin can also be used as a bludgeoning object, much the same way that a rock-star might break a guitar on the stage, except Shin won't break when he connects with his target.
