I miss those good old shows of the 80s and 90s that came on during TGIF. Step-by-Step, Family Matters, Dinosaurs. It's not that these were wonderful shows, it's just the celebration of Friday night tv. Stinking X-Files--that comment being ironic because I was an X-Phile.
So Wednesday I outed myself as being a right-wing conservative. (Not that this was a surprise for some of you.) My amiable attitude makes me want to crawl back into a hole and hide because I truly hate offending people and I really want folks to like me. However, I'm moving on, learning and growing and pushing forward.
Free Speech Protection Act
The latest Obama administration plan that has conservatives up in arms
, or particularly conservative radio, is
The Free Speech Protection Act. (I link to bill in it's original form from May 2008.)
Some legal blog's take on bill. Another Blog talking about who Obama might put in as director of the FCC. Personally, I think it's early to jump into a fuss about it; however, I can understand why those radio hosts are concerned. It was Day Two of Post Election conversation and this is already being leaked as a possibility. It doesn't sound a lot like the harmony and working together for which we're all hoping.
The trouble with this legislation is that it's kind of vague. How do you define what is defamation? Do you take a broad definition or a pinpoint definition? Is being critical of someone defamation? If we were to use that same paintbrush on the Bush administration, who would have been quieted? Of course, that wouldn't have happened because there's no way all of his critics could have been stopped without folks having issue with it.
Now of course, this thing and maybe I've got the name of the thing wrong, whenever it is rewritten, is supposed to allow there to be balance. So if you have a conservative show, there needs to be a liberal who can translate and weigh in with their opinions. It sounds fine on paper, but when it is put into action do you really want to hear the other side when you're listening to your favorite liberal or conservative radio?
I don't know. It's just something to consider. Obviously if this thing goes in the direction that the Seans, Rushes and Neils are concerned it may go in, we will all be up in arms about it. At this point, it's just something to consider.
Never Read A Bible Verse
Yesterday, I read a fascinating article/booklet,
Never Read A Bible Verse. It's pretty much common sense and could be applied to any piece of writing. The basis is not to take one sentence out of context and try to apply it. Just like I wouldn't open Lord of the Rings and turn to page 134 and try to use that one sentence to define Tolkien, I shouldn't open the Bible to page 134 and try to get some sort of prophesy out of it.
I enjoyed the read. It wasn't anything new, but it was very succinct and well-written. I am all about those things lately. I've found that ten years out of high school, my writing skills are very rusty. It's hard for me to form coherent thoughts with words. I've been blogging and using the stream of consciousness technique that organizing those thoughts into anything reasonable has gone down the tubes. It's a real shame because a) I've always loved the English language. It was my intended major before I dropped out of college. b) I've always enjoyed a well written essay or convincing argument.
I'm out of time for now, but later I might mention this call I heard the other day listening to the radio show, Stand To Reason. It was very interesting.
Everyone have a great Friday!
