That was what I thought initially too, but I find it to actually be less offensive.

I agree, many people underestimate other people with developmental disabilities. The special olympics still remain a controversial subject. It separates athletes without disabilities from those with disabilities, instead of integrating them. The special olympics also promotes some stereotypes. Some organizations also use the special olympics to gain profit.

Ya, that's how I see it as well. In addition, in some instances it may even be exploitation. Organizations tries to play the disable card in order to gain more funding. In The Ringer, Knoxville's character mentions something along the lines of how these Special Olympic athletes are as good as regular athletes.
