Well, part of the reason why I've been so busy is because I've been embroiled in local politics (which is quite unlike me). As you all know, I am SO PISSED at how high our property taxes are here. Besides our interesting, progressive community, our neighborhood is a little pseudo-podunk old farming town. Most of the farmers are (sadly) selling the ( Read more... )

Well, I *love* Costco! ;D
I had no idea it was so barren out by you. I just figured the rest of the area was along the same lines as your development. I think the major mall and the small roads sounds like a recipe for disaster. And I hear you on the astronomical taxes! And the school issues. Although we have all new large schools, so we're okay at the moment. Why is IL such a mess in terms of how they space plan, configure school zones, and determine tax rates? It just seems so under-planned if you know what I mean? Do they just want to build on every bit of farm land with no thought given to needing businesses to take on part of the tax burden? I don't understand the thought process. And the fact that the taxes are so out of proportion here seems to me to be a detriment to the housing prices. You can't gain as much equity if the tax rates are so astronomical, which hurts re-sales values. Locally by us, they are re-zoning, and our neighborhood is actually under consideration to be annexed into Naperville. Which in some manners would be great fro re-sale values, but our taxes will go up even higher, and their schools are already overcrowded. So, we could be a Naperville neighborhood in Aurora schools---NOT good. Right now we are an Aurora neighborhood in Oswego schools, which is very good. Oh-well.
Anyway, I think it's fabulous that you are so involved ----superstar of local access tv even! HA! When will all these changes/decisions be finalized?

We are a Grayslake neighborhood that's half in Grayslake schools and half in Mundelein schools. So freaking bizarre.

I wouldn't say it's barren out here - but, it's definitely nothing like Naperville or Aurora. Gurnee is more like your suburb - but Grayslake still has a lot of farm land and a lot of white-trashiness. ;) Prairie Crossing is where I live - and we are a funny little community. If you google it, you'll find a bunch of stuff on it.
