so the trip to san diego ruled.
first i picked up mike in seattle, and we hung out at lake washington for a bit, then continued on to portland. stayed the night in portland and in the morning we high tailed it for the beautiful humboldt redwoods forest in california. we set up our tent and made a fire with which we cooked those delicious 'tasty bite' indian foods for dinner. the next morning we slept in (till noon!) and packed up and headed to san francisco.
when we got to san francisco, we went first to the amoeba store in berkley, then headed to gilman where the show we were going to see hadn't started yet and we wanted burritos. so we ate a delicious burrito at a place called gordo's, and went back to the venue. look back and laugh played and they fucking ruuuuled. christ on parade played last, being their first show in 22 years, but they were totally amazing.
after the show we went to mike's friend's allie's house and played with her kittens before going to sleep. the next day, mike and i walked up haight street to the amoeba there and bought more records! then, we went to el ferolito for lunch with mike's sister heather. also, we met liz and larissa there, as they were in town as well. after yummy burritos, we all walked up to bernal heights where heather was dog-sitting. we took the really cute pups up to this amazing hill where you can see all of san francisco (and its dogs on the way up!). that night, we played scrabble, then went to see surrender play at thrillhouse records.
the next morning mike and i took off pretty early and headed to san diego. on the way, we stopped at a little town and saw some seals, went to a beach COVERED in seals (san simeon), and stopped at a gorgeous beach near big sur. we got to san diego at 1 or so in the morning so we passed out pretty quick.
the next morning we went for burritos and horchata at el zorape with mike's dad, and afterwards he gave us a tour of coronado, an island off the coast of san diego where mike grew up. mike and i waded in the ocean for a bit and then headed back to san diego. that night, mike's mom, grandparents, dad and step mom all had dinner with us. it was less intense than i'd expected, and went really well i think... that night we went to walmart and stole mike a bathing suit since he forgot his. suburban rebels!
in the morning we went snorkeling at la jolla cove. it was beautiful and we saw tons of gorgeous fish, and even a lobster! later on, we went for an early dinner with mike's mom, who bought us margaritas and really yummy food. later on, we went to a thrift store, and then went swimming at pacific beach. something touched my leg and i thought it was a piece of kelp, so i reached down and grabbed it and it turned out to be a jellyfish that stung the shit out of the backs of both of my legs. fucker. thus, ended swimming time.
on our last day in san diego, we went to the aquarium, which was pretty sweet. i pet a baby shark. then we rented kayaks in la jolla cove and found a rock full of basking seals, who came right up to our boat... so awesome. in the evening we went out to pokey's with mike's dad and step mom, and we all got a little drunk on sangria and ate too much. mmmmmmmmm.
we headed to l.a. the next morning and on our way, we went to puke n' vomit records in anaheim which opened on punk time and thus we waited for 45 minutes before we could go in. we headed into the city next and went for smoothies with karen who lives there now. she told us she just got engaged which is super exciting! after hanging with her, we went to the LAST amoeba records, in hollywood. bought more records, surprise surprise. next we drove out to san pedro and walked around the sunken city which is pretty amazing. that night we drove about 4 hours outside of l.a. (where it was 36 degrees at midnight) and slept in a haunted motel.
in the morning, we started driving and stopped when we saw a river because it was 42 degrees and we were dying (p.s. my car doesn't have air conditioning). the river was freeeeeeeeezing though so i didn't actually swim. but we stopped at a dollar store and got spray bottles and fans, so the rest of the drive we soaked ourselves in ice water so we didn't shrivel up and die. we got to portland that night and crashed.
the next day, we made giant salads to try to make our bodies not hate us from all the burritos. we made sangria and let it 'steep' for a few hours, listened to records, ate curry for dinner.... drank sangria... lots of it. the bayonettes were playing a house show so we went to that. it was awesome.
