He had never been anyone's hero before. Even here, in supposedly friendly Fenway, they had never called for him, not the way they called for Manny, Papi, even Youk and Lowell. But when he hit that homer, lofting it into the air, they screamed, and he could never remember going into his homerun trot. All he remembered was the other guys waiting for him at home plate, their hands heavy on him, and the noise. Fenway was always noisy. But it exploded as he crossed home plate, and for the first time that season, he was positive he had made the right decision.

The papers were suddenly on his side in the morning, the long hard season conveniently forgotten. He wondered if it was always like that for the heroes. He wondered if that was really all it took. Just that one shining moment, and all was forgiven. He didn't want to find out. He liked that feeling, that heady euphoria, all of Boston screaming his name. He bottled it in his soul, and slowly his numbers improved. It wasn't immediate. But maybe, maybe he really could be a hero. It helped to be a World Series Champion, and riding on those incongruous duck boats, he was flying again, that breathless feeling, like his face would crack in half if he smiled any wider.

He smiled more the next season. And when they needed him, he was ready to be a hero.
