"Better late than never," I've always said, and this year's NaNoWriMo is no different.  Although NaNoWriMo 2016 officially began on Tuesday, 1 November 2016, I've only just begun... on Thursday, 3 November 2016, to be exact, leaving me with quite a bit of catchin' up to do right out of the starting gate.  I'm not worried, though.  I've always figured that catchin' up is best done during the weekends.

As has been the case in the past, I'm having a hard time starting a new project, and it's not because it's just a new historical romance that I'll be writing during this year's NaNoWriMo event.  The project I'll be writing this year is something new.  In fact, it's something I don't think I've ever tackled before!  My new project is...

Wait for it... (as my daughter would say)

a Middle Grade/Young Adult story... told using the "first person" point of view!

So... There are two things that are different about this year's project.  First, I'm writing for a different level of readers, and second, I'm writing this story is a different point of view!!  Although I'm nervous about this project (hence the difficulty in getting started), I'm very excited, too!

This excitement stems from yet another "first" related to this year's project:  This will be my first year of being a "planner" instead of a "panster" when it comes to the amount of preparation I did before the "big day".  Although I usually think about the story I want to write during NaNoWriMo in the months preceding November, this was the very first year that I actually outlined the entire story ahead of time!  So...  I went into NaNoWriMo 2016 with a complete outline for my very first (but, hopefully, not last) "kid lit" book!  I'm hoping that (once I finally get started) the outline will help me crank out the words, so I can easily reach the 50,000-word finish line AND be able to write "The End" before the end of November this year, thereby accomplishing one of my 2016 goals!

Well...  It's getting late, so I'm going to close my very first 2016 NaNoWriMo Update post, so I can start documenting this year's "friendly competition".  I'll be following several competitors from previous years, several of my (active) writing buddies, AND several new competitors from my new region.  Throughout my NaNoWriMo career, I've noticed that my competitive spirit really kicks in during this event, and the "if they can do it, then I can do it!" phrase really starts to motivate me to get my butt into the chair and "meet my quota"!  We'll see how that works this year.  Hmmm.......  Maybe I'll spotlight some of my "competitors" in future entries...

Until the next entry (which will hopefully be tomorrow)...

Take care!
