I have had my phone, answering machine, and all the cables that go with it on my kitchen counter during the three years I have had Shadow. Throughout that whole time, she would jump on the counter, walk along the counter, and go past all the phone stuff without incidence. Now all of a sudden, she has taken a great interest. She pulls and bats on the handset coil, knocking the handset over. She leans on and bats at the answering machine. Today she pressed the rewind button while leaning on it.
So I took measures to prevent her from getting to the phone and answering machine. I put the phone, answering machine, and cables inside two small sterlite plastic drawers. The drawers are up against the wall right next to the phone jack, with only a small section of cord between the drawers and wall that plugs into the wall. Now this mischievous kitty can't mess with my phone.
I already leave my garbage disposal unplugged until I use it, lest she lean against the rocker switch that provides power to it. This was a precaution to prevent her from turning on the disposal and having it run for several hours unattended. I guess this was a good precaution after all.
