Well... day 2 of backstage on Broadway! I just saw "Fiddler" with Betsy Hogg, Harvey Fierstein, and Andrea Martin. May I say... Betsy was really good as Bielke and I'm not just saying that. She was good. It was interesting though the next daughter who was supposed to be 12 was played by a 24 year old. Also.... the person who Betsy replaced was 32. Amazing. It gives me hope that when I first start out after college... I'll be able to play young roles. But yeah... I've never seen "Fiddler" before and it was so great. Harvey Fierstein can't sing for his life-but he is a great Tevye minus the singing part. He's a great comedian and just so good as Tevye... he knows the character and really is him. As for Andrea Martin-AMAZING. I love her. Her and Harvey are so good together... she isn't the best singer but she is a great mother, and you can really see her compassion. I got to talk to her after and she's a really nice person. She was really impressed with our questions and when we saw her backstage later she was like, "there they are those smart girls" or something like that. It was really sweet. She really is a doll and her personality is very similar to that of Golde and Aunt Voula in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
So yeah... I got to see Betsy before the show and eat dinner with her. Which was a bit awkward b/c I don't know her as well as I know Emma. But she is so nice and really follows her heart in terms of decisions. She's a junior now and is deciding that she is going to go back to Shaker for her senior year which I think is great. Although it's different. She has amazing credits. This is her SECOND Broadway show... as much as many of the distinguished actors in the show! But we got to actually get on the stage. We went in the stage door and like, we are here to see Betsy. It was pretty awesome. Going on the stage was really cool. The set is really interesting b/c it has real leaves and trees. The wood is also actually from Russia! She showed us the "well" and the wings which are huge. It is like the 3rd biggest stage on Broadway-and it really is huge. The house itself isn't that big. But the stage is amazing.
The guy who played Pirchek was really good. Plus he was also really cute! lol... but I wanted to ask him questions because he really was the first to bring in the whole "breakdown of tradition." I kind of compared it in my mind to the early French revolutionaries and how no one really listened to them.
Sarah and I decided that we're going to send little things to Betsy and Emma at the stage door of their shows and write letters to some of the actors. It will be wicked.
A big part of me feels so amazed to be so close to Broadway. The thing is... I know two people on Broadway who have one of the best agents in New York. And yet... it's like I'm so close and yet so far. I can't just go up and be like... "hey can you hook me up with Nancy Carson so I can get on Broadway too?" I mean... I would LOVE to replace Betsy in "Fiddler." That would be so great. And I really could see myself in the show. I have played a girl that age (Mariette in "Flowers") and the dancing, music, and of course the emotional depth of the show is really great. I could see myself creating a character and a walk. I mean the younger daughters may not have a lot of lines but they have A LOT of stage time.
Anyways... that was day 2 of my exciting Broadway experience.
I went to SoHo today. That was fun. I felt all artsy. I bought a ring. My other ones were cheap and the stones fell out :( I love New York.
OH yeah-I looked at the section in the AP book about the Cold War. I ROCK.
