This happened, RP wise, before Christmas.

Drunk did not begin to describe Mathiu. Standing outside of the tavern, he was facing a large tree and singing at the top of his lungs. The words were slurred and completely out of tune. (more)

"I had a third world girl in Antei/With a sword in each hand/She always kept me covered/As we moved from land to land..." (done...with apologies to Buffett)

Aila walked out of the bakery and carefully held the door for Queen. It was nice to get together to catch up, and all the sweets she ate certainly made her feel warm inside. Once she got outside, she stopped suddenly, the sound of something warbling in the distance catching her ear. "Hey, Queen - do you hear that?"

Queen smiled at Aila as she held open the door for her. She pulled her coat closer to her and stepped out into the cold. "Hm?" Queen listened carefully when Aila pointed out that she heard something. She could barely distinguish the sound of singing. "It sounds like someone's singing. I wonder if some people decided to do some caroling,"

"I was kinda thinking the same thing. When we were on our trip, you couldn't walk too many steps without people singing or dancing. Do you know if people here do things like that?" Aila began to walk a little closer to the source of the sound.

The song devolved into more of a shout as it continued, "I had a damn good run in Scarlet Moon/With my high society would-be wife/I woke up drunk under the Grassland sky/Just me and my Army knife..."

"I don't know. I suppose Cecile and Wakaba would go around singing. Um, King Lino used to sing rather loudly at times too." Queen paused in step as she could automatically tell that it was no caroler. "Forget the caroling theory... Aila. Someone's drunk." Still, she continued walking closer to the source.

Aila nodded and walked with Queen. She wrinkled her nose because it seemed the closer they got, the more off-key the song was. "Who'd be out and drunk this late, though?"

It wasn't long before they reached the spot where an obscure figure was facing a tree. In the dim lantern light, Queen hazarded a guess to who it was. "Mathiu?"

The tune changed a bit and the lyrics were more angry as they were performed. "Please take your drunken boyfriend home/He's only 18 and shouldn't be here alone/Take him to get his diaper changed/Just take your drunken 18-year old boyfriend home..." Mathiu quickly jerked his pants up to his waist as he heard his name.

"Oh, my..." Aila couldn't find words for the scene before her.

Queen blinked, speechless. She leaned a bit on Aila, resting a hand on her abdomen as she felt the baby kick. She wondered if it had somehow felt her shock too. After a few seconds of silence, she coughed. "Mathiu, are you all right?"

Finished with his business, and thankfully his song, Mathiu turned to face the women. "I'm great. Grand, in fact."

Aila was still blinking but managed to find her composure. "That doesn't look very grand to me."

A look of concern forms on Queen's face. "Mathiu, what's wrong? Something's bothering you ..."

Mathiu looked around quickly and then sloppily snapped his fingers. "Yes! There is something wrong! I left my drink inside!"

"I'm not sure another drink is a good idea, Mathiu...haven't you had enough already? You're going to have a nasty hangover in the morning..." Aila tilted her head, worried.

"No hangover," he replied with a dizzying shake of his head. "We should go in. Don't want Queen getting sick."

"I'm fine, don't worry about me. But yes, let's go in. We don't want anyone getting sick." Queen walked over to the tavern door and opens it. "No more drinks though, Mathiu. Unless it's tea or hot cocoa."

"I'll vote for water." Aila ran over to Mathiu and put his arm around her so that she could hold him up. "Come on, in you go."

Mathiu allowed Aila to help him inside as he wasn't very steady on his feet. He mumbled, "You know...I've heard those Zexen fellows don't wear underwear under those kilts that they wear with the armor..."

Queen headed inside and straight to the bar, ordering a large glass of water and some tea. Choosing a table off to the side, she sits down as a server sets the drinks down in front of her. Hearing Mathiu's last comment, she nearly choked on her own saliva. "I don't think that's true. What kind of knight - or any kind of warrior for that matter - would go to battle with that area unprotected?"

Mathiu slumped himself into the chair that he was led to and leaned heavily on the table. "Maybe that's why they have lady knights!"

Aila closed her eyes, not really wanting to know that much about the Ironheads and whether they protected themselves that way or not. She coughed slightly, blushing.

Queen sighed and gently slid the glass of water to Mathiu's side of the table. "Drink up. It will help you later on."

He sniffed it suspiciously. "Where's the Scotch?"

"Mathiu, no more tonight. You're drunk enough as it is." Queen leaned back in her chair. "Why are you getting drunk on your own anyways? What's wrong?"

Aila caught the eye of the bartender and motioned that Mathiu wouldn't be needing anything more alcoholic, and to keep the water coming.

Mathiu frowned like a kid whose favorite toy had been snatched from him but took a sip of the water. "Nothing else worth doing."

"There's lots of things to do, you'd just rather drink than do them," Aila said stubbornly.

"How many times can I clean the infirmary?" he said, taking another drink of the water.

Queen reached out across the table and gave his hand a little squeeze. "Well, you don't need to always focus on your work. With the holidays just around the corner, you can just be relaxing and enjoying the company of your friends."

Mathiu frowned--darkly, but said nothing.

"Yeah! I'm looking forward to telling you all about my trip and I can't wait to show you what we brought back for you!" Aila beamed.

Queen noticed him frown and sighed again, having some idea of what could possibly be troubling him. But she decided to reply to Aila's statement in order to change the subject for his benefit. Smiling, she replied, "You two have been gone quite awhile. What did you see?"

Mathiu rested his chin on the table and stared at the water as the two women talked. He would normally be interested in such topics but at the moment all he could think about was more Scotch.

"Let me see...we visited Mua in Kamaro, and there were festivals in Addervon and Korou and...it snowed a lot. And there was lots of food and dancing and did you know that they light up the trees in their winter celebrations?" One could practically see the scene in Aila's eyes as she talked about it.

Mathiu: *stares at his drink, his eyes completely unfocused*

Queen: *smiles at Aila* I'm glad you two had such a good time. *notices Mathiu is staring off into space* Perhaps we should all take a trip somewhere when the weather gets warm again.

Aila:  Well, Jacques and I were already going to try to get back in the spring - maybe we could make a party out of it and all go together?

Mathiu: *his head lolls back and forth...*

Aila:  *is startled by Mathiu's head doing that*  Mathiu?  *blink*

Queen: *moves over and steadies Mathiu* We should get him to his bed. He's completely wasted.

Aila:  He looks like he hasn't slept a whole lot lately...I think that's a good idea.

Mathiu: *drops his head to the table mumbling something completely incoherant*

Aila:  *leans in trying to hear what Mathiu's murmuring about*

Queen: *shakes him gently by the shoulder* Mathiu, let's get you to bed.

Mathiu: *mumbles* scotch...woman...idiot...boy...

Queen: *looks to Aila* That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Aila:  I don't think drunk people are supposed to make sense.  *blinks and grabs hold of his arm to try to get him up*

Mathiu: *is lifted by Aila* Bed...I...wanna...go...bed....you.

Aila:  *looks at Queen as if to say, 'eeeek!'  *

Queen: *stifles a snicker and helps Aila by taking his other arm and throwing it around her neck* Oh my, Aila.

Queen: *smirks* He's drunk, after all. Let's put him to sleep.

Mathiu: *mumbles something else* Thank...bed.

Aila:  Was he...always this heavy...?

Queen: Ugh ... *begins walking over to the door* No, him being a drunk dead weight is certainly no help ... I shouldn't be lifting him, but you can't drag him by yourself.

Aila:  I'm just glad the infirmary isn't far.

Mathiu: *finds his feet and leans the women*

Queen: Indeed. *reaches the door and carefully steps through first so they don't all get stuck*

Mathiu: I...go...do...sleepytime....

Aila:  Yes, Mashie-Washie, it's sleepytime.  Let's go sleepy, okay?

Mathiu: Mmm....sleepytime...

Queen: Heh heh, we're almost there. *heads across the hall to the infirmary*

Aila:  I think I hear him snoring a little...*tugs a little harder to get him in the infirmary door*

Mathiu: *sleeps soundly as the women place him in his bed*

Aila:  *pulls the blanket over Mathiu and looks at Queen*

Queen: *looks back at Aila and smiles* Whew.  Our turn.

Aila:  Amen.  I'll see you tomorrow.  *waves*
