I'm currently in Fredericton, staying at my Mom's. It's been a somewhat interesting trip since it's given me a chance to step away from the day-to-day and consider a few things.
(and to also see family)
The biggest conclusion I've come to, and Phil is in the same boat, is that we're just not happy living in Melbourne and would prefer to move back to New Zealand. So with this in mind I think that we're going to start our plans to head back once I get back. Phil's already talking to some recruiters in Auckland, and I think I'll try to reach out to my old job to see what may be coming down the pipeline.
I don't regret trying the move, but it's been a real case of really appreciating something once it's gone. The main thing is just the size of Melbourne, the hour-long commute to and from the city, the busy roads, the ugly landscapes, the Australians. It's just not worth it. While salaries are high in Aus. so too are costs.
The other thing is that we've really come to realised how many friends we left behind, and how lonely we are now. We've got no support in Melbourne and it really is getting to us.
So, now to figure out the best way to pull off heading back over. First we'd need to finish the house, and thankfully we should make a good return on it. But I think regardless of how long it takes barring the completely unexpected our Australian adventure will be coming to an end sooner rather than later.
