Having postponed the decision about this year's destination for the summer vacation, by chance I came across the Faerieworlds website. This wonderful festival coincidentally takes place during an earlier granted period of absence from work.
It took me only seconds to decide about how amazing it would be to visit this yearly venue and within half an hour, I bought weekend passes, booked a flight to Eugene (Oregon), reserved a rental car and booked a hotel.
I guess I have started to master the art of acting on impulse after earlier last-minute decisions to take the Saturday morning train to Paris for a day of shopping (January 3rd), to fly to London for an extended weekend to visit its magnificent department stores (March 7th), to take an early Saturday morning flight to Copenhagen for a weekend of luxury and relaxation (May 9th) and to drive to Brussels for a long weekend of abundance (May 21st). In all of these cases, less than twelve hours passed between the forming of an initial idea for adventure and the departure itself.
But the decision to visit this year's edition of Faerieworlds was easily made, as we are regular and faithful guests of all regional fantasy and Celtic festivals, such as the Elf Fantasy Fair, Castlefest, Keltfest and the Celtic Midsummer and Midwinter Festivals. In fact, we will be attending the Celtic Midsummer Festival in Bad Nieuweschans July 4th and July 5th.
And 10, 11 and 12 April of this year, we visited the Trolls et Légendes Festival in the historic city of Mons (Belgium), where Brian and Wendy Froud, two world-renowned fantasy artists, were present as guests of honour. Brian, Wendy and their son Toby will also host the Faerieworlds 2009 festival. Furthermore, the main performing band in Eugene will be Faun, a group of German musicians who we have met during various earlier occasions and of whom I have all cd's. All ingredients for a fantastic weekend! (both literally and figuratively)
