No matter what, one should always stick by their friends, escpecially if they mean so much to you, and more-so when you feel they may be "in need," because who better to help your friend than yourself if they mean a lot?
I think perhaps threatening to end your friendship is a foolish idea and can only make your friend's situation worse, because if I was in your friend's shoes, I'm doing what I do to relieve stress and 'feel better' as it were; and if one of my best friends came to me and said that they would not be my friend, that would only create more stress and trouble for me.
Indeed, the fact that you would bring it up to your friend, and make that threat, shows how much they mean to you. Could you really give up such a friendship over such a thing? It is bad, I'm not arguing that, infact it bothers me as well. But the thing is, I would rather be there for my friend, than leave them forever.
"A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly:
and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother." (Proverbs 18:24)
I'm not a heavily religious person, but I will say that I am with you both on this, and my thoguhts are with you both as well. both have valid points, and you both are too good for this to ruin your friendship.
