=========
had a good long talk with my dad this morning. He wants me to continue looking in the private sector for a career since we both have... issues with institutions. So here's what we concluded:
Knowns:
Nothing wrong with getting a doctorate.
I'll get one in a science most likely.
Short term:
Talk to my Uncle David and Peter about what they've done.
Intern with Peter over the summer in Hartford, doing software work.
Maybe intern with David at M.I.T.?
College:
Look at degrees in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biomedical Technology.
What I've seen of these (from MIT's OpenCourseware) they seem interesting and a good blend of math and engineering
Career:
Either math/sci teacher at a SMALL highschool or college in an advanced level
Or private sector R&D/think tank (maybe a foreign countries?)
Reasons for being a teacher:
need to give back/help
most teachers I've met, I've liked
Murphy, Plummer, Ivers, Martineau, Auclair, Chevalier, Thistle, Champagne...
at professorship level allows me to research
combines my social nature with tech/sci/etc
Cons for being a teacher:
low pay
low status
politics
hard to switch to private sector
institutional
for every 1 student reached, hundreds are missed
people like Mr I are teachers (aka morons can be allowed to teach if they are good at politics)
Reasons for private sector:
Well paying
Could always switch to academics
People like jason smith, quentin lewis, tom moran (aka great guys that are all about the ideas)
still able to do research, etc
better chance of dodging institutions
Cons for being in private sector:
lots of money grubbers
still politics
when there's institution, its big
not helping society directly
cutthroat
ISO 9006
people like Mr I were engineers (aka morons are allowed to be/made into the boss
so i dunno what i'm going to do
