Today I'm in Oldenburg, writing from a computer in the middle of some bookstore here. It's funny how much American culture can be found in Germany; I'm sitting right next to a display of German books about the Gilmore Girls.
Every morning, at breakfast, the music playing in the hotel is invariably American, though, in my opinion, usually a pretty sad selection from American music. They seem to have a big thing for American pop and disco. I remember they were obsessed with 80s music when I was here back in 1998, and they don't seem to have updated their tastes. I hear Michael Jackson and Elvis much more here than I would back in the States, too. I was thinking that there'd be more Europop, but I've only heard a few radio stations with it.
It's weird seeing signs of the past all over the place. There's a movie theatre where a Nazi barracks used to be. Sex shops right next to centuries old cathedrals, etc.
I'm here for a few more days, then off to Berlin. Tschüs!
