[Gaming & LARP] The Newcomers

May 14, 2014 09:13

Something I'm thinking about this morning, because I don't wanna do homework, is how to introduce a LARP character into a new game. I've only had to live through this once, at Shadows of Amun, but it was pretty awkward. I feel like there should be something more than just "Your character shows up. Go ( Read more... )

I'm honestly still mystified at how welcoming and friendly everyone was day one, and would worry about that kind of no warning, no character connections walk-in in any other game.

It's awkward, for sure. :) Even at my first Shadows, with siriel as an IC friend who'd been in town already, it was a little awkward. Partially because *she* still didn't know a lot of people, I think. But overall it just felt like I was on my own to get engaged with the game.

What was Shadows Game 1 "intro" like? Did people just show up?

Basically, yeah. We were broken into smallish groups and trucked down the road in a big ol' PC train, which regrouped near Rick's when we heard it was being attacked. Then we glomped in as PCs do.

Was there anything for Game 3? I mean, you weren't a new PC, I know, but did you see them doing anything?

I noticed all the new players coming in as a group from the beach, but I don't know if anything other than "that way is town, fly, be free" happened.

They got jumped by Scarabs or Hosts or something and fought them off on the way in.

The newcomers began at the train station, where we were greeted by any people who wanted to meet us there. (So I reconnected with my old friend Farouq who'd come to meet me and my family.) There was some chatting, then about when we were going to head into town an army officer mentioned that there were attacks happening and we should travel in careful groups. The Senussi attacked us, we fought through, there was some minor chaos as small groups of PCs met and merged here and there on the way over, and eventually we got to Rick's and began holding down the fort there. (There was also quickly revealed to be a murder scene and some archaeological dig spots in Rick's, which people with the relevant skills went for ( ... )

There were like... 8 of us who started in Rick's? And basically we were sitting around chatting (or hiding in a corner, depending on who you were) until there was screaming and "The Senusi are attacking! The Senusi are attacking!" and then we ran for our lives blindly into the woods.

My MM "intro module" was honestly a terrible thing. It was a holding action so an existing supremely douchy PC could do a ritual to destroy the world we were on. (Multidimensional madness thing.)

It was mostly an in-joke, and also a distraction for another PC so folks could set up a surprise party for him.

Nothing tied me to the world, introduced me to anything, or really kind of hooked me at all. Mreh.

Ugh. :/ That sounds pretty dreadful, actually.

That sounds really shitty. Were you actually prevented from leaving somehow?

Yeah, we couldn't leave until the fight was done and we were led into town.

Otherwise I probably would have had a more amusing time just wandering into town solo and being all, "Hey everyone, what's the deal with this plane of existence and why can't I gate home?"

Yeah, our intro module was horrible and stupid.

And then I was locked in a Blight Citadel for six hours, which was awful.

But it came with hanging out with Dave Inkpen for six hours, which was pretty cool.

That was an 8 hour grind in a 6 hour timeblock. Total hostage situation. I was lied to, and one PC held us up for 2 hours straight because he was unwilling to blow a component to bypass a puzzle.

On the other hand, we all bonded for life in there.
