I hope you're all wearing your red today. The American Heart Association's national Wear Red Day is today, Feb. 1. It happens to remind us that heart disease and stroke are the number one and number three killers of Americans, and that simply doesn't have to be. The AHA's programs of awareness are making a HUGE difference in the lives of men and women - and kids! - across the nation.
In Tenn. alone, 20,000 will die as a result of cardiovascular disease this year - that's about the same for you guys in Ohio and Georgia, while the numbers in poorer states like Miss. are even higher. That's way too many people folks.
If you want to know if you're at risk, check out the link above, and read some of the stories, and find out where you can go for screening in your community. I've written several for the magazines in recent months, about people who didn't recognize their symptoms until they almost died. And about some that did die.
I never want to lose any of you guys to heart disease, stroke or any form of cardiovascular disease. Please - get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked, exercise, take care of yourselves - and encourage your family and friends to do the same. This is a disease that can be conquered.
I'm wearing red today. I hope you are too.
This blog entry is open, unlike the rest of my blogs, because everyone needs to be aware.
