I posted this to the Pelican list as part of a larger email. The parts of that email that were private have (of course) been removed, so don't panic. :). Oh, and I did not come up with #8 on my own. That is used by permission.
I have been thinking since my elevation (feels like yesterday) what I would base my recommendations on. I have come up with a list. I know we all have different strengths and weaknesses, but there are things most of us have in common. I don't do all of these every day, but I aim towards them.
1. The willingness to try politeness in the face of rudeness.
2. The willingness to take responsibility for mistakes and learn from them.
3. The willingness to ask for help when you are over your head.
4. The ability to think of someone else's point of view, or at least consider it when it is presented to you.
5. The ability to lead an activity or event in a way that makes people want to work with you again.
6. Absence of yelling, bullying, and rudeness to get someone else to see your point.
7. The willingness to try to decrease the emotional level of a situation.
8. The willingness to stand for what is right without concern for how it will effect your popularity.
This is not only a measure of how much work a person has done, for me this is just as much a measure of the manner in which they do it.
