so the thought goes. But I don't think it is automatic or lightly done. I understand why people say it, I think I may be asking people to change a thought pattern which is more difficult.
In the same vein, can we also stop saying "ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND????" when someone says "I'm going to do X!" whether X is cooking a feast, autocrating an event, taking over an office, whatever.
I've put my name in for autocrating 2008 Birka. I did think long and hard about the matter with occasional question if I was out of my mind or not. But that was my own internal dialogue not someone saying to me I was or asking if I am out of my mind.
Yes, yes I am. What is your point? :)
If we didn't volunteer to do stuff, would anything ever get done? No. Golly.
How about this?baronessmarthaOctober 30 2006, 15:42:58 UTC
Autocrat for Birka? That is wonderful! I am sure you have staff in mind already. You have been on staff several times and been part of a Royal Household, all of that will give you useful viewpoints when you see how you want to do things.
I don't mind the term at all. It's the overuse of the term (as with the overuse of many terms) that make me crazy.
To me it describes the person who is ALWAYS raising their hands, for everything, even with 60+ other things on their plate, even when others are willing, WITHOUT thinking about it, and not always following through.
I don't think many people who actually ACHIEVE goals have helium hand, because they think before they volunteer. But we all know at least one person as I've described above...

which usually causes a retraction of the appropriate appendage. hee hee But far be it from me to make any further comment on this subject. I fear I make it to both categories on Temair's list (sadly).
That was my thought. It's about the ones who prevent the particapation of others by voleenteering first, without thought and regardless of consquences. The ones I'm thinking of then routinely comlain bitterly about how over-burdened they are and how nothing would happen without them. To which the answer is, it would, if you'd get out of the damn way!
I've pretty much only used it for myself and palegreyminion, because I used to say I got it from her (which is patently untrue; it appears to be my own personal psychological mutation). I don't use it any more, though, because now I think at least three times before I volunteer for anything. I got so burnt my first year really active in the SCA, it's a wonder I stayed.

It irritates the hell out of me.
My answer is usually "Excuse me? I don't understand what that means."

We do all know someone like that. That person needs to be pinched by their friends.
