Velcra - Consequences of Disobedience.
Finnish band Velcra are a band to be admired for their choice of subject matter in their lyricism. In a world that is currently immersed in social and political conflict, Velcra play the magnifying glass to expose and inflame the injuries by taking a brave stand whilst leaving self-righteousness seated. Instead they believe in using music as it's most appropriate and constructive use, to convey a message. Sure music can be fun, music can be hollow, music can be cheeky, cheeky with a philosophy of ‘touch my bum, this is life’ but what is demonstrated here, is that life shouldn’t be as futile and short-lived as it’s music chart. There are so many genres, indefinable artists and bands that music is an art to experiment with; painting with different emotions and moods. Personal laments for example teach us how to feel, how to survive, how to grieve without regret or shame and how to identify, cry and progress. Emotion is universal. In contrast political stances are universal in the sense that we are all part of a society and we all hear music day in and day out. What better way to speak up about your personal views than the megaphone that is your mic and your very own lungs. Velcra acknowledge this and they create some pretty awe-inspiring tunes! When it comes to the crunch, that's all that matters and this band will chew on you with no mercy... Concocting a fusion of Industrial/electronic beats a la Nine Inch Nails and Senser and the vocal power, force and dynamism of Skunk Anansie and Manhole; Velcra produce a record that knocks out both ravenous songs as well as the more angst-ridden and melodic tunes ('Solar Red'). However mostly the case is where these two valuable entities have been melded together, constructing tracks such as 'Shine For Me', 'Tension' and 'Can't Stop Fighting'. The lyrics do not merely carry the juxtaposition of this anger and lament over OD’s annihilable and rapid programming. Velcra do indeed speak for the passionate ears and seething scars of a self-abusive world but at the end of that megaphone is a singular voice trying to make its own way at war, and build its force. Feeding on the corruption Jessi regurgitates beauty and inspiration. ‘Solar Red’ portrays this unquestionably “Bit by bit I begin to realise that all I need is to believe in what I feel” and with the fraternal draw of melancholy and perseverance of ‘Made To Fail’. If you were going to start somewhere to discover what this entire band has to offer, debut UK single release ‘My Law’ lifted off this album would be it. This is freedom of speech on a shiny disc “It takes courage to follow your heart but as far as I’m concerned it’s free of charge” with Jessi dubbing herself ‘struggling in a good-girl-straight jacket’ Need I say more?…If you want to listen to a band that packs more of a punch than society can handle, yet enjoy it all the same time-Political, Aggressive and Artistic, Velcra is the band for you. So free yourself from your restraints and do as they say, let the pressure out and obey your pleasures.
