Oh, all the things

Dec 20, 2011 19:17

It’s been so long since I last updated that all the things have happened and yet not much has happened at the same time, if that makes any sense. Mostly life proceeds as life tends to do when you are an adult with a steady job and a steady family and steady domestic partner and one neurotic cat. Nevertheless, here is stuff, in a mostly stream of consciousness manner.

So what shall I tell you? Let’s see, over Thanksgiving weekend, my extended family went to Las Vegas to celebrate my cousin’s 21st birthday. I pretty sure 95% of us were drunk by the time the plane left the gate on Wednesday night and did not sober up until the flight home Monday morning. There was abundant alcohol and ridiculous amounts of food, three different shows, but surprisingly minimal gambling. And a tour of Hoover Dam. From where we are probably now banned. It took me a week to recover, I swear. I cannot keep up with my family at all.

For my birthday, D got me a day at the spa and it was heavenly. Someday I shall win the lottery and have regular days at the spa. Like Wednesdays. I think pantless Wednesdays at the spa should be in the Bill of Rights, don’t you?

Those were the main big things that happened recently. Other than that it has been mostly learning to eat differently. I’ve had one meeting with a nutritionist and I start my diabetes education classes after the holidays, but I’ve already discovered some things:

1. Eating healthier is way more expensive. Processed, artificial foods are much cheaper. No wonder Americans are so unhealthy.
2. Eating healthier, I have to eat more. Since I started my food diary, there were many days where I am struggling to get to my calorie minimums. Which is crazy, right? But keeping my carbs down seems to keep my calories down too. I’m using a website called myfitnesspal.com to track my food and a lot of days it tells me I’m not getting enough calories. I’m going to talk about this at my next meeting with the nutritionist because I must be doing something wrong.
3. The motivation to exercise becomes easier the more I exercise. Does that make sense? I don’t know how to articulate this and I wish I could find this article I read that seems to encapsulate what I mean but basically, the more I exercise, the easier it seems for me to find the time and energy to exercise.
4. Cooking is a much more calculating process now. Instead of seeing a recipe and thinking, oh hey that looks interesting, I have to think okay, what’s the carb and calorie content, are they complex carbs or not, what kind of fat it is, etc. It’s exhausting. Long gone are the days when I just throw dinner together on the fly. Now it’s actual meal planning.

Let’s see, what else has been going on? Oh, I had a major allergic reaction to something Monday. My face broke out in hives like you wouldn’t believe. I should have taken a picture because I looked like bad movie special effects. I had to go and get a steroid shot because the Benadryl I took had NO effect. I’m not certain what it was but since it was only on my face, I went home and trashed all my skin care stuff so if any of you have any suggestions on good products that aren’t too expensive, I would appreciate it.

Fannishly, I’m stuck. I’m a couple of episodes behind on H50, several episodes behind on Leverage and Psych. I’m caught up on HIMYM and Community; apparently 30 minute sitcoms are manageable. I still have the last couple of episodes of Downton Abbey to watch and I’ve got the entire second half of this season’s Merlin waiting for me. Other than that, I got nothing television wise. I keep intending to start Parks and Rec or Once Upon a Time or Grimm but for some reason I feel like if I can’t keep up with the shows I’m already invested in, it’s like cheating to start a new one. LOL I apparently have fidelity issues even in my television habits.

And I am not invested in any of those shows fannishly. I’ve pretty much stopped reading fic. Even my stand-by fandoms aren’t really doing anything for me. SGA never dies. I’m hoping yuletide will help but what I would really like is another big fandom that I can just get sucked into hook, line and sinker. I know everyone always says this, but I think bandom ruined fandom for me. Without the constant stimulation, traditional media fandoms don’t seem to work for me. So in a grand fit of nostalgia, DAMN YOU, PETE WENTZ.

Although if anyone has any Avengers recs, I could summon interest for that.

On Sunday, we went to see Sherlock Holmes and I was mostly quite happy with it, but I had one major beef. I was quite upset with minimal Irene and was pretty pissed at the revelation that she is apparently dead. If there is another movie, I hope that is rectified. I mean if Sherlock can survive a plunge off a Swiss chalet at the top of a mountain into what I am sure was freezing water, tuberculosis should be nothing for Irene to overcome. The movie also solved a minor disagreement between D and I. We have been having trouble deciding on a name for a dog when we get one (hopefully this spring) and so after the movie we decided we’ll just get two dogs and name them Sherlock and Mycroft. That’s completely rational, right?

We saw the Dark Knight Rises trailer before the show and I swear D peed his pants a little in excitement. My one concern is that I could not understand one thing Tom Hardy said. I’m hoping that is not an issue in the actual movie.

We also watched the Immortals recently. It was bad. Why was it so bad? Was it supposed to be that bad, like in an ironic way?

Let’s see, that’s TV, movies, now onto books. I’ve finished the second book in the Inheritance Trilogy and I must say thank you to you who recommended them. I have been quite engrossed. I need to get the third one ASAP. After that, my friend Sharon says I need to read The Autobiography of Santa Clause. While I adore her, Sharon’s taste in books can sometimes be questionable, so have any of you read or heard about the book? Any opinions?

Last thing, Boston area peeps. Southwest was having a sale so I am coming to Boston in middle February. Abandoning D for Valentine’s Day, which I didn’t even notice until Lea mentioned it. Ah well, visits to fangirls are always more important than Hallmark created holidays. Anyway, I think we are going to try to go into NYC and do actual tourist stuff but I would love to see whoever I can if people are available.

Well, enough of my blah blah blah. Anything major happening that I’ve missed? What’s everyone else reading, watching, listening to, obsessing over?
