Title: The First Time
Pairing: Gary/Marcus (Collins, that wonderful young man, yes)
Summary: Marcus' experience at The X Factor has a secret behind.. Read to find out more!
Rating: PG for this part, will be NC-17 soon (sorry, I couldn't resist).
Author's Note: The inspiration came to me while listening to Cannonball in heavy rotation one day, and obviously just by looking at them together. Yes, I mean it: as much as I love Barlowen, I think they're canon. Hope you enjoy! :) (more to come soon!)
On July 13th Marcus first saw him. Well, it wasn’t actually the first time he saw Gary Barlow (whose face was all over the UK and had been everywhere since Take That comeback), but it was the first time he got to see him this close.
He’d been wondering what to wear since he had applied for the audition (which had been a good couple of months earlier) and he ended up in a casual outfit anyway: jeans, plain t-shirt and a red hoody. He had looked at himself in the mirror like a million times, he hadn’t been sure of looking quite alright for TV. David, his boyfriend, who had slept at his place that night, had assured him that he looked gorgeous and had also muttered something about Gary Barlow stealing him his man. Marcus hadn’t listened to him for a second.
Later on, when he stood on the first of the three steps that led into the stage, he couldn’t wait to be called out. After ten long minutes a girl came offstage crying and Dermot instantly wrapped his comforting arms around her, giving Marcus an encouraging pat on the right arm and wishing him luck.
He’d never been a shy boy, and this was the occasion to prove it. He smiled at the judges, greeted the audience and finally fixed his dark eyes into Gary’s blue globes. That man was.. overwhelming.
But it was Tulisa’s turn to ask questions, and he answered them cheerfully, even wishing her happy birthday. And then he sang.
Signed, sealed, delivered: I’m yours was one of his favourite songs of all times, and he gave an extraordinary performance of it: he got a standing ovation from the audience and the judges gave him surprisingly good comments. Gary said the first “yes”, and that was it: he knew he had made it.
On July 18th, he saw him again. This time he was surrounded by a crowd of people, and Gary stood on a higher level than them: he was talking on the microphone, wishing all of them the best of luck.
Marcus really, really wanted to make it to Judges’ Houses. He had worked his butt off during the last month, training his voice everyday in order to be in his best shape for the competition. He hadn’t even partied that much the night before, because he just felt that something was going to happen the day after. In fact, some of the contestants had a cold shower-news, being sent home before even having the chance to perform one more time. Anyway, he was safe at the moment.
The week went on and the challenges were hard, but the thought of having the chance to take part in the biggest singing competition of the UK really thrilled him, he wanted to be on the X Factor stage so bad.
Gary was nice to him, he even stopped him for a quick chat after one long day of rehearsals. Marcus just melted in the spot, but managed to talk to him and make him laugh. Gary Barlow had the most adorable laugh of the entire world.
