I was at the A's game yesterday. Great game. They were giving out Dennis Eckersley jerseys to the first 10,000 people and we got there early, just in time to get some... when all they had was medium... Which worked fine for me, but was a bummer for my parents.
They were giving out jerseys because they retired Eck's jersey at the game... which is pretty much the highest honor a team can give to a player. No one else will ever be able to wear that number again. A friend asked, "Won't they run out of numbers to wear?" I said, "No, because only the best of the best of the best will have their number retired." The coolest part of the ceremony (after the entrance on 5 super sweet cars) was when Houston, the 21 year old stud closer for the A's was able to exchange a few words with Eck.
No small amount of pressure was put on him to save the game because of this and live up to being "The Next Coming of Dennis Eckersley"... and he came through. The A's won the game 5-2, Houston Street got the save, striking out 3 in the 9th for it. Most impressive.
I've got packing and stuff to do now... I leave for school tomorrow early in the morning.
