They were headed to the Slytherin House Annual Alumni Fancy Ball and I'm not sure of the details, but the rumor around the punchbowl is that the Malfoys' were engaged in a 'friendly' argument in which Lucius may have called Narcissa a 'vain peacock' for trying on no less than three dozen gowns before she was prepared to leave the house. The details are fuzzy after this. But when it came time for photos, Lucius decided to make the best of things, borrowed the largest robes he could find and cued the photographer for the final shot.
