I am not a big fan of oatmeal breakfast porridge. However, I have a new oatmeal recipe that I like a lot!! It tastes like a cookie but is really good for me. I imagine it would be really good for kids too, but I would halve the recipe for littler stomachs.
Mix the following in a bowl or small pot:
1/2 banana, mashed
4 T quick oats
1/2 c water or milk (alternative melks work fine)
~1 t flaxseed, ground in a coffee grinder (or you can buy flaxseed meal, but its not as nutritious)
~4-6 walnut halves, also ground in coffee grinder
Cook either on stove top or in Microwave (2-3 minutes) and make sure it doesn't boil over the top of your container. Top with the other 1/2 of the banana in slices, a bit of peanut butter, and some chocolate chips.
The oatmeal has fiber that is good for lowering cholesterol. Oats are also good for helping with depression (important in the winter). I believe both the walnuts and the flaxseed have omega oils (good for your brain, your nerves, and your heart). Flaxseed also helps keep you regular. The banana is a good source of potassium and other nutrients and encourages the good bacteria in your gut. The milk can be a good source of protein (depending on which kind you use). The peanut butter and walnuts help to balance out the carbs and makes it "stick with you" longer. I use chocolate chips that are on the dark side of the chocolate spectrum, which are supposed to have some antioxidants. They also make it taste really good.
Yum, Yum, Yum...
