This winter season has been a bit of a sorepoint for me since it's the least about of boarding I've ever done since I learned back in 2003. But this season has been such a mixture of triumphs and disappointments. It was just another reasonable season of snowfall until August, when a long string of sunny Spring days and warm weather decided the fate of the end of season. We all thought that was it, enjoy the slushie and make the most of what's left. A week before closing weekend the latest cold snap blew through and since then it hasn't stopped dumping in Southern Alpine ski resorts - both here in Australia and New Zealand. Some areas received over 50cm in one fall over a day, and others received amounts more than they had all season over the last 2 weeks. It's been purely insane!
I lived for a ski season just outside of Jindabyne in 2005, and at being only at 930m above sea level it was rare for it to snow that low. Maybe once a season if the conditions were just right. It's been like this all week - and longer. Pictures have surfaced of people cross country skiing around the lake!
Picturesque, and beautiful. Jindabyne, after ski season closes, sees the snow fall.
Courtesy of Mountainwatch The ski lifts stopped operating last weekend, but some lucky locals get to keep jibbing it up on whatever's around.
The double upside? It's already started DUMPING snow at most ski resorts in North America. For those who live for the snow (ie. a handful of my friends, which burns me so bad!!) they'll be off to work in the USA and Canada in November ready for some sweet sweet pow that's already laying the base... I've heard rumours of early opening for some resorts... I wish I could be there!
