I had to laugh also when the narrator was pinned down by her brother and she justified her losing by saying "I" am getting bigger too.
I don't think she was easily forgiven by her family.I think her family felt empathetic towards her because she felt guilty from being helpless. I think any boy would feel the same if they had been in the same position.
Good question, "do females get away with certain things that males might not". Well I would have to say that boys get away with as much as any girl would.
