my phone mysteriously broke in half last week, so i am now left phone-less. it is amazing how much one relies on it not just for communicating with the world, but for any other pragmatic possibility it could have for its use. the first night after i broke it, i thought to myself, "how will i get up on time for school in the morning? i don't even own a clock."
but i digress from my communication woes.
one of my gerbils died a couple weeks ago and i was pretty bummed about it. jon and i bought them over three years ago on a whim from that stupid pet store in roosevelt field. we had intended to take only one home with us, but the clerk insisted that we take his brother with us, as well.
now, to most people, gerbils would seem like pretty pointless, dull pets. but, really, i was constantly amazed at the compassion the two had for one another. the one that died had been sick on and off for several months, getting these horrible nose bleeds. he would just lay there, his fur coated in this red mucus, looking helpless and presumably tired from the blood loss. during these times his brother would go to the food bowl, grab some food, run back over--food in mouth--and hand his sick brother food. just as sweetly as the food gesture (but perhaps a little more gross), he would clean all the blood off his fur and face, trying to de-matte his fur.
seriously, it was too cute. i don't care how stupid you think gerbils are.
the remaining gerbil seems pretty lost since his brother has died. he sleeps through most of the day, doesn't play or run on his silly little wheel anymore, and just looks so sad. it's amazing that there are both people and creatures who build the entirety of their lives around someone else; to the point where when their significant others die, they don't have much else to live for.
oh well. poor gerbil.
